It's the term for Compact Discs that conform to the format's original spec's. Sounds like a magazine or catalog, eh?[IMG] Actually, there was or is a magazine called Redbook, I think? Best wishes![IMG]

There are CD's that are not Redbook. People are just being specific. HDCD & those JVC CD's that are XLR or some such initials are examples of CD's that are beyond the original spec's. Actually, technically, any of the CD's that have copy-protection added are breaking the spec's too. Copy protection is not in the original spec's, Redbook that is. Best wishes![IMG]

Harvest may be my favorite DVD-A of the 15 or so I have. I notice a big improvement in sound versus the redbook
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------ok back to that quote.
why do people refer to a cd as redbook?
or a hybrid layer of a sacd as redbook?

it seems to me that a reference to "redbook" should be ref to a specific technical spec, not the actual cd you are listening to.

When people refer to "redbook" instead of CD, they're being clear that they mean the basic standard CD release of an album on regular CD instead of something on SACD, HDCD, etc.

When referring to the hybrid layer, well, again, it's to distinguish the difference between the SACD layer vs the redbook compatible layer.

It's a way of indicating that one means the plain vanilla standard "redbook" audio CD.

SACD, HDCD & redbook are all on "compact disc" format - so just saying CD isn't enough to distinguish what is meant for audiophiles.

Redbook AKA A Guide To U.S. coins by R.S. Yeoman first edition 1947, the book publised annually always has a red hard cover. I have no idea what in music, other than what I read in previous posts, ONTH I have seen it about HDTV and a Red 'push'.

ok i see. so when i say that i just listened to the new cd by rush, that isnt enough information anymore?
even if i am talking about the regular old plain "cd".

on the other hand if i was talking to someone about the sacd wouldnt i say "hey how about that new sacd from rush wasnt that great?"
or..."yea but, how about the hybrid cd layer on that rush sacd what did you think of that?"

i understand now what it is when someone says redbook, but it just seems like a case of "talking too smart"
