I see a lot of posts about disabling SVM on various sets...what is the rationale? I assume leaving it enabled negatively impacts picture quality somehow?

It "sharpens" images by artificially "enhancing" edges. The result is distortion and artifacting--a very artificial looking picture. This, is a bad thing.
