Just as in the subject heading, What are the differences between the Rotel RB-985THX and RB-985MKII amps?

Power, model year, sound quality, build quality???

Thanks,

Scott

The original model is quite old dating to 94/95. It also gives up 10 watts and has plainer cosmetics.

IMO, if you're on a budget a cheap original model would be fine.

However there is much better buying if you want a new 5 channel.

Scott -

I've had my 985THX for almost 6 years now and have been very pleased with it. I've listened to many other 5 channel amps in the $1000-$1800 price range (Marantz, Acurus and others) and have not heard a reason to change. If I were in the market for a used amp at the $350 price point the 985 would be at the top of my list if it included the original boxes and manual. If it didn't have these I'd see if I could close the deal nearer $300.

For that amount of money, you won't buy better. Perhaps you may find a Parasound 806/855.

I liked my 985THX. I eventually went for something from Parasound (IMO is better than Rotel) but for the value, Rotel is the winner.

I have had both but I now own the 985THX. $350 is a great price and I would go for it. The difference is truly only cosmetic if you consider you will never hear the additional 10 watts. Some of the originals were still made in Japan while all the Mark II's came after they made the move to Malaysia or China. Some think there is a difference in quality.
