I am going to be buying a new surge protector locally soon and these are the only two that are in my price range that a can get here. The 2500 would be nice but I can't afford it. Anyway, there is a $50 price difference between them. Is the 1100 worth the extra $?

the hts1000 (1665 joule) is about $85 while the hts1100 (1850 joule) is about $150. i pulled those prices off of nextag.com so you may well do better than i did. their feature set is different so I don't know if any of the capabilities is important for you. In terms of surge protection, its pretty much a wash as the differences are nothing to write home about.
If its simply surge protection you're concerned about and you live in your own home, you'll get infinitely better protection by installing a whole house protection system. then anything else you install will simply provide for a bit of local redundancy and you can concentrate on the other cute little things these power centers do.
