What is the deal with "screen masking"? (1 Viewer)

I've heard other mention this in threads and i've never really understood it. I know what it is but the question for me is "why? Why do people cover parts of the screen? Isn't the rest of the screen just black? Why would you need to cover that?

Because digitals can't produce black, so you can see the bars compared with black around the rest of the screen.

And light spill will also light up those areas that should be black. By masking with black fabric you can improve the perception of CR.
