I have a $200 budget and would like to pick up a player that can play all regions and as well as convert PAL to NTSC. I can spend up to $200 but would like to keep it around $150. Also, do all region-free players need to hacked or can some play a different region disc without anything being done to it?

For about $70 to $80 you can get the Toshiba SD-4900 which does great PAL to NTSC conversion, has a better than average pic for players in this price range, and can be made region free. But to make it region free you need to download a hack from www.dvdrhelp.com and burn to cd-r. The only player I'm aware of that doesn't need to be hacked for under $200 is the Norcent 501M. You do need to access a hidden menu to make it region free, but don't need to download any hacks. Sells online for about $170 shipped. Also does upscaling to 1080i over component. Great picture at 1080i, a little below average at 480i/p.
