Relative just bought a new widescreen RPTV and it gets there this Friday. By what I have read on the forum getting it calibrated immediately is essential. What is the Avia disk and where can I get it? Is it the AVIA guide to home theater disk? Is it better than the Video Essentials dvd I have heard about? Thanks.

It is called the AVIA Guide to Home Theatre. The disc contains a variety of tests for setting up and calibrating video and audio components. There is a basic set of tests for adjusting tint, brightness, contrast, etc. on video displays. There is a section of test for setting up multi-channel audio components which include test tones for setting speaker levels, including subwoofers. Before the start of each test there is an explanation about what is supposed to be accomplished. There are other sections about selecting audio and video components, as well as accessories such as speaker and audio/video cables. I found those sections less helpful due to the fact that selecting equipment and such is a matter of personal preference.

There are numerous tests that are useful mostly to technicians or advanced users. You could probably find the disc at Circuit City, Best Buy, or any higher end audio/video store.

I have not used video essentials so I cannot provide any info on which disc is better. I have heard that AVIA is somewhat easier to use than VE. Each disc, apparently, has strengths and weaknesses depending on who you ask. Hope this helped.

Try running a search for it and you'll find a lot of info.

Shopping tip: stores tend to carry calibration discs on the "Special Interest" shelves.

FYI, amazon.com currently sells this DVD for $37.99 with free shipping. I almost just bought the copy I found at my local Suncoast, but I decided to save the $12 and wait a few days for it to arrive. Bought some Christmas presents in the same order as well. [IMG]
