A guy I know wants me to design and build his new HT. He's willing to put around 2 to 3 grand into a 6 or 7 speakers set-up. What are good matched speakers for such a price?

Swan Diva Line

Buy the 6.1 package and 2 r3's for the back surrounds. Should be around 2500 before shipping then buy a sub with the remaining 500.

get the m80tis, qs8s, vp150 which will cost $1920. then you can get their stands for the qs8s for $135 if you need/want them (these stands are made for the qs8s cos they have an open bottom for these quad-firing bad boys). that leaves you with enough money to buy speaker wires, interconnects, and a pair of svs's : )~

B&W 600s3 speakers would be a fine choice. He could get 4 601's, a LCR60, and an ASW2500 (B&W's small driver, big amp sub-similar to a Velodyne SPL-1000) for about $2300. B&W also has 2 new 600 series subs that have the same cabinet finishes as the rest of the line, but I don't know how much they cost.

Nothing against the Diva's, but I think spending $2500 on them and only $500 on a sub would be a mistake. You don't want to skimp on the sub, for a few hundred more you can get something from SVS or HSU that would be much more capable.

I just ordered an Axiom/SVS setup: M60ti mains, VP150 center, and a combination of M3ti and QS8 for the surrounds along with a SVS 20-39 PCi. Grand total was about $2200 (purchased factory-outlets for the M60's to save some money). You could step up to the M80's for the mains and still be under $3k without compromising on the sub. In fact, you could probably step up to the CS-Plus with Samson amp and still be under budget.

I agree with Jason P. Brett on the make of speakers to use from B&W's DM series 3 line up but I disagree with what he chose, especially the sub as that is designed for the next range up and is reflected in the price, one of the new series 3 subwoofers would be much cheaper. I am in the U.K so not sure of costs in the U.S but DM603 S3's as mains, depending on room size the LCR60-3 or the bigger 600-3, then again depending on room size 601's or 600's at the back, this should all fit within your budget and creat a very good home cinema set-up.
If B&W's are not to your style check out Missions 78series which are also highly capable speakers.
