what is a band equalizer?

    No, you dont need an equalizer and most HT systems dont have one.
    The exception is that some rooms have poor dimensions for acoustics. Having similar-sized walls will reflect the same frequencies and give you a 4-fold increase in some sounds. This is usually a problem with subwoofers resulting in a very painful "BOOM" at some frequencies.
    So a equalizer is sometimes used to tame these sounds. A very popular device is the Behring Feedback Destroyer. Despite it's name, it is a programmable equalizer.
    There are 2 kinds of equalizers: bandpass and parametric. The BFD is a parametric, and I'll be darned if I can remember the difference.
