Dipoles, IMO, significantly diminish the MCH music experience (I understand their advantages for movie soundtracks and, in an ideal room/budget, I'd have a set of each for each application--but I bias my setup for music [placing my projector screen higher than ideal in order to place the centre channel speaker at the proper height for audio, for example] so I have monopole surround speakers). YMMV

Ahh yes the ITU versus THX spec dilemma for those of us into both multichannel music and movie surround sound and who don't have (or perhaps don't want) separate rooms.

Btw, has anyone found an online source for replacement SA-CD and DVD-A jewel cases? Be mindful of the fact that, in my clicking around at least, the Super Jewel Box brand that is more widely available is NOT the one that most SA-CDs and DVD-As are packaged in. Same footprint, but those cases' wider hinges make for a different cut of the back panel artwork.

This has been a good week for hi-res audio for me. For Christmas I got 2 more Elton John SACDs, Captain Fantastic and Madman Across the Water. I also got 8 new RCA Living Stereo SACDs, and I picked up the SACD of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. It is a little bit loud, but I like the surround mix a lot. I also ordered Elton John's Peachtree Road SACD. The only one of his SACDs I'm missing now is the self titled album. In a few weeks I'll be picking up the King Crimson Lizard DVD Audio disc. I also have my eye on a few Mobile Fidelity SACDs at my local music store. It just never seems to end......

Re "It just never seems to end...... ": Yup--ain't it grand! ;) It's part of why I bristle when people say these formats are "dead."
Re Petty Anthology Blu-ray: Grrrr I so wish that disc was available a la carte (ironically, the CDs are available separately--WTF?!). I dig Shepard Fairey but that pricey set is filled with a few goodies I simply don't need.

RE: Peachtree Road, to both Paul S and Dan, I'm quite fond of this album. I've had it for several years, just not on SACD. I think it is unfair to compare to the early stuff. It's just a little different, but on the whole I think it is as strong as just about anything he has done. Tumbleweed is my favorite with maybe Yellow Brick Road second. I also like a lot about The Fox, even though I know it isn't very well respected. it's MUCH better than anything else he was doing at the time.

John, It's not hi-res, but if you can find a copy on CD, Blue Moves is a great late era Elton album. It's a double CD, and I think right now it is out of print, but I like it a lot. I also really like Peachtree Road. It was not promoted well at all when it first came out. But I think it was a intentional look back towards the earlier stuff with Elton and Bernie. And you can always count on Elton stuff being well-recorded.

Dan, I suspect I know someone who has Blue Moves.

I received a DualDisc of NIN "With Teeth" yesterday and thought I'd give the MC version a try. All the channels light up on the receiver, but I'm only getting sound from 2. It seems pretty much identical to the 2 channel version, though I didn't compare closely. Anyone know offhand what I might be doing wrong? I'm sure there is some setting I have set up wrong. FWIW, movies play right as do SACDs.

Never mind on my last question. I figured it out. It is so annoying that manuals don't come right out and tell you how to use the equipment anymore. Punch buttons and sometimes you figure it out.

In addition to R.E.M.'s Document DVD-A, I've recently found new copies of (speaking of Elton John) Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (DVD-A) and a few of the Diana Krall titles (SA-CD and DVD-A) at a local Best Buy. Although these are available online used (especially Diana), if you're interested in new copies for whatever reason, please PM me. I'm interested in trading those for titles I'm looking for.

For those of you finding SACDs at Best Buy, are they just mixed in with the regular stuff?

A couple more of Telarc's SA-CD re-releases of their early 50k recordings (that I had on CD and sold in anticipation of getting the SA-CDs . . . finally): the "old" "1812"--I like this performance more than Telarc's "new" "1812"; and the Louis Lane/Atlanta 1981 recording of Copland goodness, "Fanfare," "Appalachian Spring," etc.--interesting that they changed the program here, adding a Hindemith work I'd never heard of to the SA-CD that was not on the CD. Both for $5.99 or less from Newbury Comics.

I had gotten both of those recently, since I don't have the regular CDs. I had all those (Except the Hindemith) on LP. I've actually never been wild about that 1812, but the Gershwin they included are my all time favorite recordings of those pieces. More orchestral and less jazzy than they often are.

If you are willing to trade Natalie Merchant's Tigerlily DVD-A (in at least very good condition) for a new copy of any of the following SA-CDs please PM or e-mail me.
    James Taylor - Flag
    Gloria Estefan - Alma Caribena
Esa-Pekka Salonen/Los Angeles Philharmonic - Bernard Herrmann: The Film Scores

I found a copy of Train's SACD "Drops of Jupiter" at my local Best Buy (had a 10% coupon too) mixed in with the CDs.

I'm tired of waiting for a good quality used copy of the 3-CD whole enchilada of Solti's famous "Matthew Passion" with the Chicago Symphony and Chorus to show up from a decent Marketplace merchant on Amazon. Thanks to Scorsese's glorious use of the "Wir setzen uns mit Tranen nieder" at the opening of Casino, I've had the highlights (arias and choruses) CD for years and dig it. Going to an L.A. Master Chorale performance in March and need to bone up on the rest of it.
Any comments yay or nay on this (new) recording on SA-CD? It would be my first anything from Linn Records.

I don't have that disc, but I have a few Linn recordings and they are uniformly excellent in sound quality. Performances are quite good (though I'm not as "well-read" in some of the pieces I own to say they match or approach the best interpretations).
