Just curious...

What happens (or should I say DOES NOT happen) if I keep my 8-yr-old Yamaha RX-V596 receiver and connect a Samsung LN32A550 1080 LCD HD TV and Samsung Blu-Ray BDP1500?

It is crazy to even want to use my current receiver with this new TV and Blu-Ray?

Thanks for your patience with this question....

It's ok to use older receivers with newer gear. The biggest difference will be with the blu ray player. If that player has the 5.1 analog outputs, and your receiver has the 5.1 analog inputs, you can still hear the HD audio from blu ray movies. If the player doesn't have the analog outputs, you can use optical or digital coax, just as you probably already do, and still get DD and DTS. But, to me, that's defeating one of the main purposes of a blu ray player. I'd rather have the HD audio, than the HD picture, personally.

In addition to what Ed has already said, a new receiver has much more to offer than an 8 year old one. But depending on which speakers you have, your money might be better spent there than on a new receiver.
