This is what Yamaha says it is:

"6-CHANNEL INPUTThe RX-V530's rear panel has input jacks to accommodate an external decoder. The receiver is ready for any other 5.1 multi-channel format, should one be developed."

I still don't understand what I would hook up to it. Can somebody reference an actual product.

    Thanks

A DVD-Audio player or a SACD player would need to be hooked up to it. They have their own decoders built in, and you receiver's built in decoder will not decode thesetypes of formats.
    Does that make more sense?

DVD-A and SACD are analog formats and are already decoded at the source. Both come in stereo and multi channel, thus the need for mutli channel analog inputs.

There are also DVD players which have decoders built in also, which again, are analog multi-channel.

In both cases, all processing is done prior to the amp, so the amp is essentially serving as a stand alone amp for these components.
