This is especially for those who took German. That is what I'll be taking this year, so what did you think of it? How hard was it, and how much has it helped you later in life (if any)?

Even if you didn't take German, what language did you take? What did you think of it?

I took Spanish, but didn't learn much of it. So I only know the basics. But I'd say it's a good second language to know if you plan on living in the U.S. for the rest of your life since the number people you encounter who speak it is growing all the time.

I didn't find it too hard to learn, it's just that it was boring to learn. Do you plan on going to Germany at some point or did you just feel like learning it?

Took two years of Spanish in high school and I'm sorry to say that at this point in my life, I hardly remember any of it. [IMG]

One year in HS and a semester in college. Never used it and have forgotten most of it. I wish I had been into foreign films back then, I probably would have studied harder and been much more into it.

As a Yank now living in Sweden, I took French in my American high schools. Now I wish I took Swedish (although it wasn't offered) [IMG].

French. And, like any course one takes because "it's expected" or will look good on one's college applications, I hated it and resented the time it stole from other, potentially interesting courses. I wound up dropping it junior year and substituting more English courses.

As for how it's affected my life - when I'm watching a subtitled film en français, I can pick out which words are being emphasized, but most of the time I'd be lost without the subtitles (I think I could have handled Alphaville or Tati's near-silents, but that's it).

I took 2 years of German in school, went to Germany had a blast and remember a little bit. Just don't fall behind in your vocab or you'll get lost fast.

I took a semster of French in College, for some reason I don't remember any of what I learned... though I dicided French is not for me.

I took 3 years of Spanish in high school, and now (14 years later) I've forgotten almost all of it.

I really wish I had learned Japanese instead, I probably would have used it a lot more.

    I'm taking Spanish right now.

I'll be taking Spanish II next semester (starting in Jan.)

For college, I think I'll take Spanish again (if it's required) or French (if it's not required).

    Pidgin English.

No I had French at school, which bored the crap out of me btw, the only reason I attended was because the French teacher was gorgeous and always wearing the shortest skirts, very distracting to French learner Stevie, but hey I can still count up to ten in French so there.:p)

ps.Hmmm I do know a little German though... she's sitting over there.

I guess as a Canadian, I should say I took French as a second language, rather than a foreign language.
Of course, in Canada, you don't get a whole lot of choice. [IMG]
I loved it. French was one of my best subjects. I think it should be manditory (if it isn't already) to take at least a couple of 2nd language courses. Because honestly, learning the rules and usages of a 2nd language aids in the correct use of the English language. At least that's the case with the romantic languages.
