Ok, I am a big PS fan. They revolutioned and advanced gaming beyond compare (NES did the same thing). I have my PS2 on constant rotation of games (currently FFX, GTA3 and DMC). My friend was over and was asking what is the Emotion Engine suppose to do. I told him it's just a fancy name for the graphics processor (forgive me, but hardware in console aren't my thing) kind of like the Geforce 2 in our PC's. Is this correct?

The "Emotion Engine" is the Sony name for the main custom processor inside the PS2 - not the 'graphics processing unit' but the main chip.

It's a bunch of hype in other words.

From what I remeber reading, the Emotion system is a special processor that is good at things like emulating hair blowing in the wind.

My 2 cents,

Peter

Back about 5-6 years ago (not too long after the original Playstation was released), Playstation creator Ken Kutagari said that he envisioned the next generation of Playstation hardware going beyond pushing polygons and instead being able to reconstruct subtle facial expressions and "emotions" in characters. Later, when the Sony/Toshiba processor for the Playstation 2 was conceived, they named it the "Emotion Engine."
