Sometimes at work, our so called "SmartFilter" proxy server seems to think www.wrc.com is some kind of sex site. I have to use the IP address if I want to go there. Obviously it's a name based filter, but I'm trying to figure out how does it think WRC has any relationship to a sex site??? anybody have a clue?

    I'm stumped!

Well, S and E and X are the keys next to W and R and C on the computer keyboard. [IMG]

Probably the same reason when my company used to block stuff based on filters that bestbuy.com and majorleaguebaseball.com were blocked (along with other really wierd things).

Filters do not work, but people in charge of installing them don't bother to do their homework on them. Internet filters have got to be one of the biggest scam businesses yet.

    Work????? What's that...

I'm trying to find out all the categories... So far, I've come across a couple of them:

    sex
    drugs
    extreme
    games
    gambling

I haven't found anything else, usually I either use a DNS lookup or simple Google's cache to get around them. (usually the game sites, really, honest!)

What do sex and WRC have in common?
    • They can both be timed events.
    • Amateurs shouldn't expect to pick up too many tips watching the professionals.
    • Good equipment is often the difference between first and second place.

    Can't think of any more.

Jay, try going to google and do a search for "cooking chicken breast" see if your filter blocks it [IMG]

One time I tried to access The Onion's website and our filter blocked it under the filter "alternative journals."

I wonder, who does the categorizing? Do sites voluntarily rate themselves for a fee from the filtering software companies or does some programmer have to go site-to-site or use keywords?

    Mmmmm, burning rubber...

Actually I felt like a WRC driver a little bit on Tuesday morning getting to work. Too much snow, no shoulder, which means I'm forced to drive to work. So it's like the rally of sweden! I did a nice powerslide going into my company since the entrence is sort of on a downhill off-camber turn and I knew nobody was coming out so I just went in a little fast and fished the tail out (RWD) and slid a little before my snow tires (Blizzaks) got grip... Weeeeeeeeeee....

I work at the internet filtering company, N2H2. We currently have wrc.com categorized as swimsuits, cause of the "rally babes" section that they have. Swimsuits isn't a very commonly blocked category for our company. Who do you go through?

    And another:
    • The French are highly rated in both endeavors by some people.

Mark, the burning rubber one is great.

I've been blocked from some videogaming sites due to "criminal skills". They must think that Grand Theft Auto is some kind of tutorial... [IMG]
