well, if memory servers it's a hookup for your modem, an external speaker of sorts. I've never tried using it before, it may or may not function well as a general line-in

I beleive TAD is short for Telephone Answering Device, which means if you have a modem card that have some telephony capability, such as speaker phone, you may want to connect it to your sound card.

thats exactly what its for and also to use your modem as a speaker phone thats all its for.
