What does the cinema mode on a Panasonic RP56 do? The manual claims it "mellows" the picture and sharpens dark detail. I don't understand what this means. In particular, does it have anything to do with DCDi?

Panasonic has this color control feature on other models as well. It's no magic bullet.

It primarily lightens the "black" scale -- shadows, dark hair -- so that more detail then can be seen. The trade-off is that the overall color looks "softer" with less contrast. That picture takes getting used to as a matter of taste.
