When I first heard this three years ago I was told it'd been around awhile. According to the girl I heard use it, it can mean pretty much anything. It's one of those that depends on the context.

"get crunk" means let's have a great time.

    1. let's get this party crunk!
    2. the club was crunk tongiht!
    3. man, it's time to get crunk!

i am not sure about the 'get high' connotation. i have never heard it used in that fashion.

I heard an interview w/Lil Jon, the self proclaimed "King of Crunk" and he said it was acting "Punk" but in a hip hop way like slamdancing.

didn't Conan O'brien come up with the word 'crunk' or 'krunk'. I can't remember, it was like 10 years ago. It was his attempt to create a swear word.

I think it's also used to refer to a sub-genre of hip-hop and/or rap music.

a few years back, it was reserved for getting hyped/excited WITHOUT drugs/alcohol explicitly, at least in how I heard it used.

All I know is, and I am a fan of Hip Hop (have been since mid 80's), that "Crunk" rap is absolutely terrible. Its a tad better than the Miami sound of the late 80's to early 90's but just plain awful.

Thank you Paul, I was beginning to think Iwas the only person who had seen that old Conan episode. He definitely coined the term.

I think the popularity of the word, going from hip-hop underground to mainstream notice, is due in part to the breakaway success of OutKast, which draws the pop music spotlight on Southern rap. While most mainstream rap is from New York or California, the Southern style is finally becoming prominent. They like to crunk a lot.
