Extremely low-end speakers sometimes employ the use of whizzer cones. Anyone know what a whizzer cone's purpose is?

Acts like a little megaphone and concentrates the higher tones into one direction. Probably limited response to 12kHz or so.

Very cheap, very sad substitute for a tweeter.

Go, Colin. Get your groove on. It's your birthday. Uh, sorry. Just amazed at how quickly Colin responded (and mainly by the fact that he knows this answer :D).

I hear Bose is working on a new and improved version of the whizzer cone to incorporate into its new line of speakers. Using the ancient art of origami, to create the "Wave Whizzer".

"Wave Whizzer" is good, but "EQ that bad ass whizzer" still takes the cake, I believe :D.

P.S. It's the "bad ass" part that's the icing on the cake, by the way (still makes me chuckle when I think of someone actually saying that with feeling  ).

Since I'm a month away from fifty I know exactly what a whizzer cone is. It is a double ended open cone one slips over willy while standing at the urinal. Handy tool for ensuring that those final few drops hit the porcelain instead of the front of your pants. Don't you remember the catchy slogan "No more pecker tracks for me".:D :D :b
Sorry couldn't help myself

Bose will open litigation to reclaim dominance in whizzer cone technology.

"Since there is no additional signal path, the highs are free to flow directly into the cone"

Optional EQ required for best effect, $599.
