Do you think two persons with mental health issues can work out a healthy long relationship?

My brother has generalized anxiety, while his long-distance partner has bipolar. Their relationship is very trying and challenging. He and his partner are both tired and jaded even though they love each other. My brother has been in several serious relationships before but his illness always got him. They have been trying to improve and encourage each other but are both very tired of dealing with their symptoms.

What is your experience regarding having a romantic relationship with someone who also has a mental illness? What do you think is the best way of managing such a relationship?

Eve, I wish you guys best of luck dealing with this issue. It's got to be hard on all involved. You might have much better responses by posting your inquiry at www.reddit.com/r/relationships - it's their bread and butter to try to provide advice on complicated situations! Of course, be wary of arm chair psychologists, but there may be nuggets of helpful advice worth listening to.

I did some research and found articles that helped me understand my brother and his girlfriend. I gave them a list of sites that could help them deal with their situation, one of which is this one.

Eve there is an excellent movie I saw a while back Mozart and the whale. Really 2 people who had mental issues and worked it out. I taped it for my son who is bipolar. We ALL have some issues the stigma is really low these days. I have to add though there is violence in my situation, my son wants to kill me sometimes thinking I am going after the girls he likes and all is a delusion Everyone Is unique and some of the greatest musicians have been off in the brain, but doesn't mean anything. I have been in mental hospitals and seen some horrible situations but have come out Knowing everyone is valuable and everyone deserves love and acceptance and guidance and help. In this world where celebrities who have friends and money and every material thing we all think we need kill themselves it shines a light on what is missing and that is only LOVE. Good luck Eve and anything and all can be said on this forum. The people here are into movies and sound but we all have hearts and we all help one another. .

This is a question for medical specialists not for unqualified forum readers who would unlikely to have any medical knowledge on the subject. The ONLY way for you to get qualified help is from the medical profession. If you lived in Australia (and many other countries),then any medical assistance would be free. We now have a National Disabilities Law which provides tax payer funded treatment for anyone with a disability and that includes all medical costs, and even paid carers for every person under the age of 65 years. If you are disabled then you would not have to pay a cent for your needs. A massive cost to the taxpayer.I understand that this is a world first for disabled people and long overdue.

You are very welcome Eve. I hope things work out for the best. Life, and love are very complicated. A lot of ups and downs. But the glass is ALWAYS half full, not half empty.
