For years I have scratched my head wondering why this film has consistently been praised as a masterpiece and one of the world best film. I watched it again this weekend. I did notice a few shot shots that seemed a little tricky for the late 1930's. My appeciation rose several notches. I then listen to Roger Eberts and Peter Bogdanovich's comments. They perfectly examined and explained many of the details behind the lighting, special effects, audio technology, props, settings, set designs, etc. Many of the effect seem so passe for today but to realize they were first produced in this movie more than 60 years ago explained to me why it is considered so great, so revolutionary. It's amazing how much a well done commentary track can add to the movie experience.
