My centre speaker and fronts have a frequency response of 38Hz - 20kHz
what would be the appropriate crossover setting on my receiver given that its crossover settings start at 40Hz

It might help to know what sub and speaker brand you have but the standard response would be to set the size to "small" and the x-over to 80. But you could try 60 as well and see which sounds better to you. But I wouldn't go as low as 40 even with the 38hz spec. The disc you're playing probably isn't going to send very much that low to the center anyway. Thats what the sub and/or fronts are for. I sometimes have my Polk CSi5 center set to 60, mostly for music.
