Actually, it looks like nearly all of the pre-Cinerama widescreen attempts were large format or multi-panel. There was an early "experimental" film made with the original Hypergonar lens (later used on The Robe, I think) based on To Build a Fire, but it's lost. The few 1930 attempts were all in 65mm.

Peter Bogdanovich says that he was the one who informed Wayne about the state of affairs with Stagecoach in the late '60s, that the original negative was long gone and that Wayne's print could be used to create new elements, when Wayne showed him the collection of prints of his own films that he gotten from the studios over the years. Bogdanovich recounts the tale in his latest book, "Who The Hell's In It?"
