I'm working on a new build and got most of my parts already but I need my optical drives. I will be using the DVD to watch movies and play games, etc... so I want a good drive to do it. I went all out on a Radeon 9800 Pro so I wan't maximum performance for the $$$. I have heard the Pioneer, Lite-On, and Sony drives are good. Is this still the case?

Also looking into DVD-R/+R drives. I have never owned one and want to know what's good. With this drive I don't need the best, just something reliable and good quality.

Any recommendations for me?

Hi Jeff,

Recently bought a Sony 530 8X DVD -R/+R burner. Had no trouble burning 4X -R DVDs. Would definitely recommend it.

I have a Liteon 411S (firmware upgraded to a 811S) and a Liteon 451S (firmware upgraded to a 851S) and both burn at 8X with the appropriately rated DVD+Rs with no problem. Each drive cost around $80 after rebate (look for sales each Sunday).

My 411S is now up to HSOP. My 451S is now up to GSOA. Bounce around here for details and tips (start with hitting their forum link on the top of the page).

I've been very happy with my NEC 1300a +/- burner.

Just wanted to throw it into the mix. :)

Goes for around $180 or less on Ebay (got mine there).

I have the Sony DRU-530A

It is rated very high in the PC magazines.

I love it!
