I've always felt that Sesame Street has a barely-hidden nihilistic subtext, a Nietzsche-eque take on the world that can hardly hide its wail of hopelessness and inner desolation.

Do you mean currently running? IMO, the darkest show of all time was Chris Carter's "Millennium." Currently, Law & Order: SVU has some pretty bleak moments and, of course, is about extreme human depravity. "The Sopranos" is a kind of black comedy in which you watch a tragedy, in the Greek sense of the term, unfold and strongly suspect that the Furies are going to wreak havoc with Tony and his family, with the occasional comic moment. (Things will not end well for that family.) Ditto, albeit less so, for "Six Feet Under." The Fisher's world is one in which no one seems to learn anything from their mistakes. Instead, they are haunted -- literally -- by them.

Last season of ANGEL (don't bother anymore...)

I'd go with Six Feet Under too.

Speaking of Sesame Street, Farscape can be pretty dark at times. Has a lot of style too.

Line of Fire is pretty gritty.

"24" Can be pretty dark sometimes. Terrorists out to kill people is pretty dark. A lot of torture scenes too.

One that is not on a regular basis anymore is China Beach. Very dark and very good too.
I'll agree with past Angel seasons (especially season 4) and Farscape too.

I havent seen OZ but I hear thats pretty Dark.

Thanks guys. What I kind of meant by Dark shows were like Millennium or Profit. But thanks I never saw Dark Shadows or Nip/Tuck. I'll have to look for them. Line of Fire is really good I love that show and Angel Season 2 was pretty dark too.

Nobody's mentioned it, and it probably goes without saying, but The X-Files could be quite dark, both literally and in terms of storylines.

And while the question naturally steers us towards genre shows, I'd argue that some mainstream shows - and I'm thinking here specifically of The Practice and ER - can be very dark. A lot of episodes from both series end on very low notes, without much reason for hope or optimism.

Yes, but then came Teletubbies. Tinky-Winky is arguably the most sublime expression of existentialist angst ever to appear on TV.

How about Spooks (I think it was re-christened MI5 in the US)? CSI can also be a real laugh-fest some weeks.

I'm surprised somebody hasn't mentioned it yet, but "The Shield" is a great show that sort of fits in this category ... (gritty might be a better description than dark, but hey ... close enough) Season 2 just came out on DVD and season 3 starts on March 9th....

Darkest shows I have seen would be:

    Millennium
    American Gothic

And boy do we need both of these on DVD.

Angel and Dark Shadows can be dark at times.

From what I recall, Profiler was a pretty dark show....somewhat in the same vein as Millennium although not nearly as good IMHO.

Howard Stern always complains about ANGEL being dark. He said he can never see what's going on.

    Not exactly what you meant....[IMG]
