According to media reports today, NBC will air The West Wing in widescreen during the upcoming season.
And recently the head of HBO spoke of using one of the HBO multi-plex channels to create a widescreen channel. He said it was an idea that was definitely going to be implemented, he just wasn't sure how long it would take.

HA, I can see it now. All over the country local NBC affiliates get massive phone calls during the season premiere of West Wing saying "what is wrong....what are those damn black bars?????!?!?!?!"
ha hah ah ah ah ah ahaahaha
This is very good news. WW in WW will be awesome. Don't care so much about the HBO news since I don't subscribe, but it is very good news added to the fact they will start broadcasting in 5.1 too.....

I recall that ER was only planned to be aired in widescreen for only a couple of weeks. When they did not receive many negative reactions, they continued throughout the season.
I hope this is a growing trend.

I hope Friends will follow (in 2.35:1). [IMG]

If HBO decides to start a widescreen channel, they'll probably crop 2.35:1 films to 16x9. That's what they do now on their HDTV channel.
