Has there been any word as to when this musical masterpiece might be reissued. The current version has sync problems during "Tonight", one of the best scenes in cinema history. What a shame too, as the current transfer looks great.

Image quality becomes unimportant when Marni Nixon is singing for Richard Beymer.

Yes, it needs to be fixed. We had a whole thread on this, 3 years ago. Now that MGM is in Sony's hands, maybe somebody will do something about it.

Plus, I have heard that the movie itself needs restoration, and this might be the time to do it.

    This is old news.

Yes, the synch needs to be fixed.....and the last release was still a far cry from what the film deserves. The film looked better and sounded better than before, but there is much room for improvement, and the documentary was so follow-the-dots. I can forgive mediocrity in special features if the film presentation was spectactular, but that wasn't the case here.

This film really does need a full-throttle restoration.....

As for looking better, the last special edition was visually identical to the first, no-frills DVD. Only the sound was different—or so it appeared to me. It actually appeared to lok very similar (same master?) as the last MGM laserdisc, which was a very beautiful transfer.

I believe the film may have been either restored or preserved before the SONY / MGM agreement came to an end.

That's pretty funny! My memory is kind of faulty, is the sync problem that bad? I might have to cue this dvd up again.

How can one of the greatest musicals of all-time not be restored or preserved properly?

I was going to ask if you were serious about this until I read who made this comment. Very funny, indeed.
