My family Has several hundred old VHS tapes. Among them, I found Several things. Including VHS recordings I made of Gomer Pyle USMC. When I was growing up, the show came on WTBS at 5:30 every morning as I got up to get ready for school. I would record it and watch later. It also came on a local ABC Affiliate at 11 PM every evening during a few summers. I also recorded those. The Episodes are uncut as far as Music rights.( as we know, The DVDs have music right related cuts) So, I will be attempting to convert them to DVD if I can find blank physical media and my DVD Recorder/VCR combo Machine. It was packed during a move and its in storage. I also found old recordings of Star Trek TOS and several family related home movies we made at Christmas etc etc

Just test the playback deck with a sacrificial tape first. And hope you got a good one with linear and hifi sound (and hopefully a timebase corrector either in the deck or the transfer device!) depending upon how the tapes were recorded.

Make sure the machine is clean, guides are aligned, pinch roller in good shape and that it doesn't "chew" the edges of the tape while playing.

Best of luck and have fun watching the vintage stuff!

Good for you. I'll bet you're glad you hung on to those tapes.

How far back do the recordings go? Late 80's? Earlier? I have questions about the Star Trek episodes if and when you get around to them - depending on when your family recorded them.

If I remember correctly, they started in 1990. A local CBS Affiliate ran TOS from 4 PM to 5 PM daily for about 2 years

I love going through old tapes. Sadly I tossed most of them during a move, luckily there are only a couple that I regret getting rid of, but I did save a precious few.

I’ve slowly been transferring them, and if it’s a series that I own and have loaded to plex, add that version to the mix. So if I want to get the feel for an episode of The Lucy Show from an 80’s broadcast froM a local station, I can choose that over the dvd rip.
