Well, I broke down today and went on a horror buying streak today. Since my collection was devoid of horror films except for Halloween, I went and bought 5 horror films on DVD.
    The Evil Dead
    [IMG]
Well, I'm somewhat disappointed with the transfer of this film. I was hoping for more. The transfer is dirty and filled with grain. But I've seen worse. Didn't buy the Book of the Dead, because I didn't want to spend that much.
    Evil Dead II
    [IMG]
Much happier with this transfer. There's far less grain and dirt in the print that the Evil Dead. In fact, it's a pretty good transfer. Of course, these films are probably in poor shape to begin with. Audio and extras are good too. Just don't expect transfers like Toy Story 2.
    Army of Darkness
    [IMG]
This one is the best of the three. Very clean print. Still a bit of grain, and a slight amount of dirt here and there. Good transfer. Anyone who is a fan, should be most pleased with the look and sound of Army of Darkness and Dead By Dawn. Evil Dead is again, a disappointment.
I also bought Gremlins: Special Edition and The Thing: CE. Both have very good transfers, and Gremlins has a very good DD track. The Thing does also, but it's not quite as good as Gremlins.
    So, what did you buy?

For Evil Dead, I would have gone with the Elite Special Edition. I prefer the 1:33:1 framing and the transfer is brighter and lacks the defects of the Anchor Bay version. Anyway, I own Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness (bootleg too) discs and they are great. I haven't bought anything this week because I'm horribly broke. [IMG]

I think Todd Harbour's review of the transfer on AB's widescreen Evil Dead disc sums it up rather nicely. The central theme of the review:

I bought pretty much what everyone else bought:
    Pulp Fiction Collector's Edition
    Jackie Brown Collector's Edition
    We Were Soldiers
I really wanted to get Pet Sematary also, I've been putting it of for too long, but it was either out of stock or overpriced at every website I tried.
I managed to get the above titles from Best Buy.com for $54 with overnight shipping so that wasn't too bad.

The only DVDs I bought this week were the SLEEPAWAY CAMP First Aid Kit containing all three films plus the extra 4th film footage disc, and I also bought the new DVD of WOLFEN.
The next few weeks are gonna cost me a lot! Lots of excellent horror films coming out, and thats what I like to see!

Along with Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and We Were Soldiers, I also picked up the two Gremlins SE's. Haven't gotten around to The New Batch yet...but will this weekend.

I bought the Back to the Future Trilogy, i've only had a chance to watch the first one but so far i'm very happy with the video/sound side of things. Can't wait until I have the chance to go through the next two chapters, I have a couple of R1 discs on the way but they won't be here until next week - Pulp Fiction and Blade II. Looking forward to devouring both of those discs as well.
