I pre-ordered Summer Lovers (a guilty pleasure from the '80s) from DeepDiscoutDVD.com for $9.36 all in. "What a great price!", I thought. It arrived today whereupon I found out why (much to my disgust); it's pan & scam only.
The worst part is that this is most likely the only version MGM will release - it's not a film that will be getting an SE treatment (unless Peter Gallagher's career should take an inexplicable turn upward... ;)

See...ya shoulda done an HTF search before ordering. We already mentioned a few months ago that this was P&S only!

I don't know what pan and scan is but I know that nothing could make P. Gallagher look bad. :)

Shana, how about if there is less of him there? I guess you must be new here not to know about P&S. Well, welcome to the Forum! Nice to have you here.
This isn't the easiest question to answer, so let me try to tackle it with help:
Widescreen Advocate has a number of good resources to explain what pan-and-scan is. Ryan Wright's demo and Jan Strnad's explanation are about the two simplest ways I can help explain what Pan-And-Scan is.
Pan-and-Scan = "FullScreen" movies = "Standard aspect ratio" = "4x3" = "Modified Aspect Ratio" (MAR) = THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN MODIFIED FROM ITS ORIGINAL FORMAT: IT HAS BEEN FORMATTED TO FIT YOUR SCREEN
In other words, they chopped off the sides of the film to fit it into your TV. So in scenes where your guy was on the extreme left or right of the screen in theaters, I must ask: were is Peter now? Perhaps nowhere, is where. Summer Lovers used the widest form of widescreen available at the time, a format technically called 2.35:1 (the width is 2.35 times wider than the height of the screen in theaters). The Star Wars films use this format. That means they had to cut off more of the film to pan-and-scan it to fit the standard almost-a-square TV screen.
That is why I only support ORIGINAL Aspect Ratio ("OAR"). For most of us here at Home Theater Forum, NO OAR = NO SALE!
I hope this helps you understand a bit. Cheers,

Well, I definitely wouldn't want to wack any of Peter off.

You explained it perfectly, David. Thanks!

Dave,

My bad. And I even read your roundup that included the notice about this disaster of a chop job. Somehow I missed your warning on this title so didn't cancel my pre-order. Maybe selective vision in action? (I was really looking forward to this release.)

Anyway, I'll be double checking on ANY catalog release from MGM before purchasing in the future. Shame on MGM!

No No No, don't blame yourself based on THAT. I had forgot to put that note in my Roundup until after I posted my note to you in this thread.

There was a different discussion, months ago in the Software section (do a search if you're interested) that I was referring to earlier. But the non-OAR note was left off just because I was hurrying. My bad, not yours!
