I looked for a review of the Blu-Ray here and couldn't find one. I picked this up over the weekend, and popped it in my player last night to watch it for the first time in quite a few years. I didn't end up watching it. 5 seconds in, I knew I was in for disappointment. A terrible, botched mess of a transfer that makes 'The Color Of Money' look fine. My new "worst looking film I like on Blu-Ray" is now reserved for this title. Unbelievable. The DVD looks better.

Any fans of the film...STAY AWAY! :(

I saw reviews on other sites and so I was aware of the bad blu.
The good news is that it is the version with the correct music intact.

I noted the problems with this transfer in our Weird Science thread a few months ago. It does live up (down?) to Universal's usual standards.

I wish I would have caught that before I made the purchase. My own fault for not doing a little research first. As far as Universal titles, this is the absolute worst one I watched(sampled). Heavy DNR in some scenes waxy faces, and macroblocking with oversaturated colors bleeding through in the others.
A nightmare. A play by play of what not to do for a proper Blu-Ray release.

Ditto to everything Bryan said. It's typical Universal b.s.

As usual, leave it to the boutique labels to give movie titles the love they deserve. Arrow does amazing work, so I am excited to purchase this day one!

    This is good news.
Hopefully that price will come down to a reasonable one.

Why does Arrow go through the trouble of making the 4K scans and not releasing a 4 K disc.

Going by their history the price point will be at $30 on the release date.

I have given up on UHD from boutique labels (don't get me started on Criterion).

Well, if the sales for older catalogue titles on blu-ray number in the low thousands, the numbers for 4K would likely be in the hundreds, not nearly enough to justify a release.

Personally, I'm much more interested in Sixteen Candles than this one.

Things like this keep Blu ray collecting fun. I cannot believe that the original BD release didn't get as much love as this is going to get, especially when it was originally released during the BD collecting heyday. The attention on that release was there, and it would have likely sold 2-3x as many units as it probably ended up selling because it was so lackluster.

I'm sure all eyes will be on KINO's 4K UHD release of Hannibal (the cannibal) out this week ...

I don't know much about Arrow Films. Are their UK releases region-free?

    Some are (1/3 to 1/2 are A-compatible), some aren't

MOST of the items that are released in the US and UK fairly closely together (Dual Releases) will be Region Free or Region A/B.
Most items released in only the US or Only the UK that have other studios releasing in the other region will be locked.

The Arrow website is better than Amazon or Zavvi is listing Regions, but it far from perfect and a lot of their items listed as B are actually A-friendly.

Weird Science is highly likely to be A+B at least.
16 Candles I would almost bet will be B locked.

The best list I can find of ARROW UK releases -- those items listed as DUAL as assumed to be A-friendly but have not been tested yet.

I have it; it's about 50 times better than the old blu. Gloriously grainy; all the colors look right again. I think the old blu was just an uprezzed old dvd transfer anyway.

Prices -- 19.99 at B&N ($35 FS or members), 21.99 at Deep Discount but a 15% discount code available ($25 FS)
$24 at Bullmoose ( $30 FS) but no sales tax fo 98% of the US.

The Steelbook (not std) is apparently in-store at Barnes and Noble so $18 for members. I don't think extra coupons will work in-store and I know they don't online.

There's grain, there's detail, there's a nice flim look. Add in the special features and this is a fantastic release.

I didn't want the steelbook luckily I had one store within 25 miles that got 2 copies of the regular edition in(also 2 copies of the steelbook). After the 20% off member mailer coupon didn't apply the clerk ask if these were Criterions and I said not this one and she manually added the coupon, $14.40 before tax. IMG_20190725_131031.

Which store has the regular edition in stock -- also surprised it was 50% of since it';s not widely stocked, but bonus time.

I only found a few stores nationwide that carried it in house (a couple LA, stores, PowerPlant Baltimore, and one NYC store)
I went with the Steelbook for $18 (tried the coupon, but no luck with an override) though I would have probably gotten the regular one if they'd had both.

Well technically I did -- I was going to order Dumbo 3D from AmazonUK so I added Sixteen Candles and Weird Science to the order so ends up around $17-18 for each after shipping.

I’m turning about 7 shades of envious green reading these tales of discount after I got rooked on Amazon for $22 & change for this title ( now up to $27.99).
Guess that’s what I pay for the convenience as the nearest B&N is a 25 mile drive.
