The Disclaimer

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

The Specials

--Best Buy, this week, has EXCLUSIVE STEELBOOK PACKAGING with their 4k UHD Blu copies of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I believe you will pay a premium for the packaging, however, as they list the price at $34.99. There is no price listed for a regular 4k release, though, so I am guessing on that. But a non-steel 4k Fantastic Beasts might be available at a lesser cost, I’m not sure.

--Best Buy also has a promotion to get a FREE Sing lunchbox when you purchase some select titles. Titles shown are: Sing, The Secret Life of Pets, Hop (all on Blu). Up to 50 titles from which to choose.

--Best Buy Odds and Ends: The four new Harry Potter 4k UHD Blu releases are shown in the Best Buy flyer as being available on Tuesday. But they don't want you, apparently, to know their price.

--Target this week has an EXCLUSIVE BLU-RAY RELEASE of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The release (with no premium pricing) includes “Newt’s case pop-up packaging” and 5 character cards.

--Target Odds and Ends: Sing on DVD for $17.99.

Well...

This is a week a lot of people have been waiting for.

Some pretty big releases of new films...and some long sought catalog releases. Not a huge number of titles in the grids...but a lot of good stuff there.

For me, the 4k Patriot's Day is on its way to me from that Target 2-for-1 sale several weeks ago. I don't know why I didn't pre-order Fantastic Beasts as I enjoyed (in the theater) and own the Blu-rays of all the Harry Potter films. But I didn't see this in the theater and wasn't moved to pre-order. But I suspect it will eventually drop in price down the road and I'll pick it up to check out. I really don't know all that much about it.

And I pre-ordered the Planet Earth II 4k combo pack from amazon.uk.

Safe shopping everyone! And thanks in advance for any "likes" to the OP. I see 'em and appreciate 'em. I love putting this thing together for y'all.

Thanks for your work, Mike!

Those horrendous Fantastic Beasts prices must be some kind of sadistic April Fool's joke on the part of WB, right? Right?

I'm going to swallow hard and buy it anyway, because I am a huge Harry Potter fan and I have all of those and I loved Fantastic Beasts in the theater, where I saw it twice, and my collection won't be complete without it. And, I know I will watch it a lot and can't wait to see it again, so there's no point in waiting. However, I'm not happy about it, and future WB releases had better come down in price or I'm going to skip them -- Lego Batman, I'm looking at you. This had better not become a pattern.

I also want both A Monster Calls and Silence, which are among my favorite films of last year that almost no one else actually saw. However, to get all three at once would be around $65+tax and that's way too steep. So, regrettably, I'm going to have to let Silence go for now and will get it down the road after a price drop. I don't want to wait on it, but even though I think it's extraordinary, it is also the most difficult of the three to watch, so will be replayed less than the other two and therefore has to be the one to wait.

So, Fantastic Beasts & A Monster Calls will be on the way to me from Amazon, and we'll see about Silence later. There is absolutely no reason that Monster Calls, which only made $3.7 million in its entire domestic run and is probably going to be in the red forever, should be the cheaper of these two releases; I would have expected to pay more for it and way less for the big $233 million-plus hit. WB is being plain greedy by not getting the regular Fantastic Beasts Blu-ray to at least $19.99, and it will work this time, but not again.

That being said, I highly recommend both A Monster Calls and Silence as rentals to anyone who hasn't seen them already. They are great and both deserved to engage significantly wider audiences than they did. A Monster Calls would be excellent for family viewing with older kids. 20th Century Women is also very much worth seeing, although not something I feel compelled to own.

Thanks for the RoundUp!

The reviews for several of this week's releases are posted. What's the Matter with Helen? can be found here.
A Monster Calls can be found here. September Storm 3D is located here.

Fox has sent word for me to expect Why Him? and Archer Season 7 though neither has arrived as yet. I also put in for a couple of others from this week's release list but didn't get them.

Warner has had some awful prices on major new releases for awhile now. I wonder if they had gotten into a pissing match with Amazon (like Amazon is in with Disney now) and these higher prices were the result of that? I'm going to wait a few weeks. Target or somebody will put it on sale for $14.99 and Amazon will match.

I didn't catch this one in theaters, but it was going to be a blind buy for me on the basis of the franchise's pedigree. But not at those prices. I'll wait for Redbox and then pick it up in the bargain bin down the road if I like it. I have such a backlog of unwatched titles at this point that I probably wouldn't get around to a second viewing before then anyway.

It's like they want physical media to fail. Whatever they make on the extra $5 from the sales they do get will probably be more than wiped out by the people making the same calculation I did.

Sorry Matt (and the entire HTF review team)! I was a bit distracted at work and home this week as I was putting this RoundUp together.

All three of Matt's links have now been added to the original article. And I have also included two links of RAH threads offering insight into this weeks release of Patriot's Day on 4k UHD Blu and Blow-Up on Blu.

Good stuff!

I ended up cancelling my Fantastic Beasts preorder. Yes, I have the the Potter's on blu, but that price didn't budge from announcement to now...and I'm not dying to see it.

Besides, I have 10 dics coming to me between SAE, TT and the Disney Movie Club. I think that's more than enough. :)

Thank you Mike!

That is an interesting theory. I guess it's a marker of the fact that I haven't bought a new release from Warner Bros. in quite some time, so have not noticed this pattern before. I'm only accepting this price, begrudgingly, because I grew up as a Harry Potter kid and the franchise has strong sentimental value to me, so I'm sure I will watch it this week. If this trend continues, I will not be so lenient on other future WB releases.

Only Wishmaster for me this week. Well, technically last week since it showed up from Bullmoose on Thursday and I'm already two movies out of the four deep. But yeah, gotta love them Vestron videos!

Bizarrely, the listing on Walmart's website for A Monster Calls says something about there being an exclusive for it without indicating what the exclusive is: https://www.walmart.com/ip/55449329...d=dsn_fb_290fd1be-a654-4be9-8969-178852545353. Since I've already purchased it from Amazon and it is out for delivery for me today, I'm not going to worry about this, but it seems odd that they would care to do a store exclusive for a $3.7 million-grossing bomb. Perhaps there was an exclusive in mind when the film was expected to perform better, and they nixed it after the results it had? In any case, the regular edition coming to me from Amazon is a Blu-ray+DVD combo, just as the exclusive is listed as, so I can't imagine what the exclusive might be.

It'll probably get more views in this thread, but a possible steal

http://www.frys.com/product/9080327

$26.99 Backordered, but available for order for now (or free pickup possibly for those with nearby B&M)
$2.99 economy shipping -- FS at $49 I think
Limit 1 per household

Could be a price mistake, could be an error, but for now it looks interesting. Fry's has honored Price mistakes in teh past, though shipping sometimes has taken a long time.
