The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!





The Specials

--Another week, another unavailable Disney title on Amazon.

--Best Buy, this week, has an EXCLUSIVE "GRAPHIC NOVEL" with its Blu-ray copies of Trolls. No premium pricing for that. As you can see, It says "graphic novel." I gotta figure that's a misprint and that it's a digibook.

--And, Best Buy also has an EXCLUSIVE RELEASE of Justice League: Dark which includes an EXCLUSIVE GRAPHIC NOVEL (probably accurate this time) AND a figurine, I guess. While not mentioned in the text, it shows a picture of a figurine. Price will be $29.99.

--The following “DC Favorites” are on sale at BB this week “…starting at $8.99: Justice League: Gods & Monsters, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Assault on Arkham. Who knows what the price will actually be...

--And half of the space in this week's flyer devoted to movies goes to "MUST-SEES FOR YOUR ONE & ONLY." It says choose from up to 65 titles and shows a Blu double feature of The Notebook & Lucky One along with a whole bunch of DVDs...but no prices listed for any of them. What's the point? They should do that with the TVs in their flyers and see how many people come into the store to do some TV shopping...

--Best Buy Odds and Ends: None to report.

--Target this week has EXCLUSIVE PACKAGING AND BONUS CONTENT with its Blu-ray copies of Trolls. Over 20 minutes of bonus content—not sure if it’s on disc or online. No price premium.

--Target also has EXCLUSIVE STEELBOOK PACKAGING with its Blu copies of Justice League: Dark. The price is a pretty steep $24.99 and there’s no price listed for a non-SB Blu.

Safe shopping, RoundUppers!

A HUGE week in terms of catalog titles (AND new releases!). Lots of titles and a wide variety.

Surprisingly, though, nothing for me...although I keep staring at that 4k/UHD price on John Wick and thinking I should be buying that title (again)...but I won't (must...be...strong) as I've only watched the Blu once and don't...need...to upgrade. There. I'm sticking to my guns.

Thanks for your wok, Mike. Loving was a good movie, and I would recommend a rental to anybody who missed it in the theater, but it's not something that I would want to replay very much so I don't think I'll get it. Might get the new King Kong blu-ray to upgrade my old DVD sooner or later, but that's not a huge priority for me either. So, nothing for me this week.

Fox has assured me I'm getting Trolls to review, but it hasn't come yet, and I don't know if they're going to send the UHD or just the BD. I have Almost Christmas here, and that review will go up tomorrow.

Any Audrey Hepburn films on Blu are immediate purchases.

I forgot about King Kong. I might pick it up for the new special features and to replace my old HD-DVD, but I will probably wait a bit as I'm splurging on UHD discs at the moment.

Thanks Mike! JL Dark is in the mailbox...just hasn't made it into my hands yet. I'd be more interested in The Mummy if there was a set of all the films (like Frankenstein and Wolf Man). As is, I'll wait for the inevitable collection when the new movie gets released.

Wasn't planning on getting anything this week, but ended up picking up Overboard and Once for $5.99 each during Best Buy's four-hour flash sale today. The former's always been a guilty pleasure of mine, but couldn't justify paying more than that for a subpar transfer. The latter is a blind buy on the basis of having enjoyed Begin Again and Sing Street.

I think Once is far better than either of those, so think you'll likely enjoy it. The Broadway production of same was also fantastic. I have the DVD of the movie, but haven't upgraded to Blu-ray....given its low-budget origins, I'm not really sure if the upgrade in quality would be all that noticeable in this case, so assuming you bought the Blu I'd be interested in your thoughts on its quality.

I have the DVD of the movie, but haven't upgraded to Blu-ray....given its low-budget origins, I'm not really sure if the upgrade in quality would be all that noticeable in this case, so assuming you bought the Blu I'd be interested in your thoughts on its quality.

Highly variable. At its best, the video quality far outshines what DVD is capable of. But it only hits its best intermittently, with the batting average improving as the film goes on. The movie was shot using a HVR-Z1E, which was one of the first "prosumer" HD video cameras and known for the ability to record high definition content onto standard definition DV cassettes. It was also a 1080i60 camera, which outputted to 24p through built-in 3:2 pulldown/filmizing processing. This during a time when digital cinema as a whole was still in its relative infancy.

Low light scenes are the biggest problem, with lots of banding (even the occasionally blocking) and video noise in the dark areas of the frame. The daylight scenes and the well-lit indoor scenes fare a lot better -- though there are focus pull issues where the focal point of the frame is not quite in focus, and these are not infrequent. But I believe all of the flaws are in the source material, and given the manner in which the film was shot, it's a miracle that it looks as good as it does. The biggest draw for the Blu-Ray is probably the DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 audio track. Listening to the movie via high-end headphones was an absolute pleasure.
