From her early days in funny but flimsy Mack Sennett two-reelers through her more substantial roles under the tutelage of Cecil B. DeMille and on into the sound era of romantic comedies, here is Gloria Swanson at the height of her powers and popularity, alongside such fellow legends as Wallace Beery, Lionel Barrymore, and even Charlie Chaplin. No fan of classic cinema should miss out!

Disc One
His New Job (1915) – This is actually a Charlie Chaplin short about life on a movie set, co-written by gossip queen Louella Parsons (!), costarring Chaplin’s rival Ben Turpin, and – as a stenographer – 18-year-old Gloria Swanson! A fascinating vintage curiosity. 32 mins.
The Danger Girl (1916) – Cross-dressing in 1916? You bet. Gloria stars as a lovesick girl who dresses up as a man in order to seduce a rival femme away from her beau (Bobby Vernon, her Mack Sennett costar). 20 mins.
Teddy at the Throttle (1917) – Classic comedy with Gloria as a naïve girl who winds up tied to the railroad tracks by the villainous Wallace Beery –her real-life husband at the time (and nearly as villainous). "Teddy" is Keystone Teddy, the Wonder Dog. 25 mins.
The Sultan’s Wife (1917) – Gloria and her boyfriend sail to India where an evil Rajah wants to make her part of his harem. Once again, Teddy the Wonder Dog saves the day! 20 mins.

Disc Two
Male and Female (1919) – Turning from comedy to a Cecil B. DeMille drama, Gloria is a spoiled rich girl who learns about the qualities that really matter when she’s shipwrecked with her resourceful butler (Thomas Meighan of The Miracle Man). 115 mins.
Hollywood Remembers Gloria Swanson – A fascinating look at the life and career of Gloria Swanson, from her early Mack Sennett days through Sunset Boulevard and beyond, featuring classic clips. 25 mins.

Disc Three
Don’t Change Your Husband (1919) – A DeMille comedy with Gloria as a frustrated housewife who divorces her slob of a husband (Elliott Dexter of Flaming Youth) and marries another (Lew Cody of Dishonored), only to find she’s gone from the frying pan into the fire. 60 mins.
Why Change Your Wife? (1920) – Another comedy from Cecil B. DeMille in which Gloria – in a variation of the previous film – is the wife who is divorced by her frustrated husband (Meighan again) after he meets the lovely Bebe Daniels (42nd Street). 91 mins.

Disc Four
The Affairs of Anatol (1921) – This time, both husband and wife are two-timing each other in this DeMille comedy that features the ill-fated Wallace Reid (who had little more than a year to live) and, once again, Bebe Daniels. 117 mins.

Disc Five
Sadie Thompson (incomplete) (1928) – Arguably Gloria’s finest performance of the silent era; Somerset Maugham’s classic tale of a loose woman (Swanson) who sails to Pago Pago to start a new life, only to fall under the influence of an unforgiving and overzealous preacher (Lionel Barrymore of It’s a Wonderful Life). Sadly, the final reel is currently lost to the ages. 82 mins.
Indiscreet (1931) – Leo McCarey (The Awful Truth, Going My Way) directed this witty romp, with Gloria as a young woman who is tempted to stray from the man she loves (Ben Lyon of Hell’s Angels)by an unsavory old flame. 81 mins.

Newsreel & Interviews – A fascinating assortment of Swanson rarities, including vintage newsreels and interviews. 8 mins?

Total: 675 mins. = 11-1/3 hrs.

The Infernal Affairs Trilogy: Infernal Affairs 1, Infernal Affairs 2, Infernal Affairs 3.

Paul Robeson: Portraits of the Artist: The Emperor Jones, Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist, Body and Soul, Borderline, Sanders of the River, Jericho, The Proud Valley, Native Land.

The Disclaimer Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

"LP" in the RoundUp table means a store’s Sunday flyer says "Low Price". That means I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

The Specials

**BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL! The Departed AND School for Scoundrels (NR) are available in both OAR and MAR versions...get the correct one ! School for Scoundrels is available in both rated and non-rated versions…but the theatrical (rated) release is OAR only. Get the one that’s right for you. !

--As someone who has not been paying attention to the latest in the HD format wars, is Blu-ray starting to pull away? I only ask because over the last several weeks BD releases have totally overshadowed HD-DVD releases in terms of number-of-titles released.

--Didn’t take long for the new Rocky SE to drop down in price. It’s included in this week’s Best Buy $9.99 DVD list!

--Best Buy has an EXCLUSIVE DELUXE EDITION OF THE DEPARTED available. The 2-disc SE includes bonus material and 4 movie post cards…all in a steelbook case ($22.99).

--A 2/$20 deal @ Best Buy! Buy The Departed: Standard Edition ($14.99) and ONE of the following DVDs ($9.99 apiece) and get the two DVDs for $20: This Boy’s Life, The Aviator, Mean Streets, Get Carter. Must be purchased on same receipt.

--A buy two/save $5 deal @ Best Buy. Buy The Departed (either edition) AND Infamous ($14.99) and save $5, instantly, on the total purchase. Must be purchased on same receipt.

--BB also will give you a $5 savings on ANY Disney DVD ($14.99 and up) when you pre-order Peter Pan 2-disc Platinum Edition. DVDs must be purchased on same receipt.

--At BB, purchase NBA: Class of ‘03 on DVD and get a bonus disc on-pack which includes the 2004 NBA Rookie Game.

--Best Buy will give you TWO FREE BLU-RAY DISCS with the purchase of the Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray Player ($799.99). Choose from over 100 titles in-store or @ bestbuy.com.

--Big savings @ Best Buy on Golden Girls: Seasons 1 thru 6! All are on sale for $10 off.

--The following Disney DVDs (Reg. $19.99) have been marked down to $12.99 this week @ Best Buy: Kronk’s New Groove and The Chronicle of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

--The Best Buy flyer also shows a FREE MTV 2007 SAMPLER, instantly, with the purchase of ANY MTV DVD.

--Best Buy Odds & Ends: Best Buy has a number of titles on sale for $5.99 (Reg. $9.99) and $9.99 this week (Reg. $19.99). Some nice titles in that $9.99 sale—including Rocky SE, World Trade Center and Thank You for Smoking.

--Circuit City has a FREE $5 GIFTCARD with the purchase of The Hills: Season 1 on DVD.

--Save $10 @ Circuit City when you buy The Golden Girls: Season 7 and ANY OTHER season of The Golden Girls. In store only. Must be purchased on same receipt.

--Do ANY Tyler Perry fans read the RoundUp? Please LMK. I am consistently surprised by how often there are deals on the Tyler Perry DVD catalog in the major stores…yet he is one of those stars/celebrities (remember my Dane Cook episode?) of whom I am completely ignorant of his work. This week at Circuit City, they have EXCLUSIVE MOVIE MONEY TO SEE TYLER PERRY’S DADDY’S LITTLE GIRLS in eight different TP titles: Madea’s Family Reunion: The Movie (12.99);, Madea’s Family Reunion, Why Did I Get Married?, Madea Goes to Jail, Meet the Browns, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea’s Class Reunion, I Can Do Bad All By Myself ($9.99 apiece). Up to $12 value. Valid 2-11-07 thru 2-23-07. In theaters 2-14. See stores for more details. This program is issued by Metabank. I cannot explain how the movie money is valid starting 2-11-07 when the movie doesn’t hit theaters until 2-14-07.

--Circuit City Odds & Ends: CC also has a special sale list of DVDs for $4.99, $6.99, and $12.99 apiece this week.

--Target has an EXCLUSIVE DELUXE EDITION OF THE DEPARTED on DVD. Includes bonus content and the original script of The Departed. Items are packaged together. Quantity limited. No rain checks.

--And, Target has its own EXCLUSIVE DELUXE EDITION OF THE HILLS: SEASON 1 on DVD. Includes photo book, bonus disc with over 30 minutes of extra footage and special episodes of MTV’s TwentyFourSeven and My Super Sweet 16. Quantity limited. No rainchecks. This is the first time I recall any of our major retailers have their own deluxe edition of a TV show on DVD (but I might be wrong).

--Target also has Sex and the City: Seasons 2 thru 5 and 6.1 & 6.2 on sale for $19.99 apiece.

--Target Odds & Ends: Usual assortment of $10 DVDs, plus some $14,99 recent releases.

Departed on Blu-Ray for sure (maybe Usual Suspects as well). And for rentals, jackpot!

Half Nelson
13 Tzameti
Marie Antoinette
The U.S. Vs. John Lennon

If you haven't seen either Half Nelson or 13 Tzameti yet, do so. Both are excellent.

Thanks, guys!

The Departed, for sure. My wife was a big fan of Beauty and the Beast during it's network run, so that may wind up as one of her Valentine's gifts if Sam's Club has a decent price.

Anyone know if "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" in the Steve Martin: Wild & Crazy Comedy Collection $14.99 is in it's OAR? I already own "The Jerk", but would still pick this up if I could get a widescreen DMDWP. Don't care much for "The Lonely Guy"

Anyway, I'll be getting The Departed and All in the Family season 6!

Thanks, Guys!

For the first time in weeks, there are TWO DVDs to buy: All in the Family and Golden Girls...but I am finding that better deals on TV sets are starting to become the norm after they have been out for awhile. (Who'd have thought that "Friends", "24", etc. could ever be had for $19.99 a season or LESS?)
Half Nelson and The Departed are must-rents...

Glad you fellas mentioned this. I always assume (and we all know what that can mean!) that these things are just existing product re-packaged and marked down to spur sales.

So, I'd be awfully surprised if Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid was re-mastered in its OAR just for this kitschy little collection of Steve Martin movies. But, then again, I am proven wrong all the time.

In fact, I'd be concerned that The Jerk might be the old MAR version that was floating around for years before the 26th Anniversary Edition was released.

It's all hard to say. Info is scarce. The Amazon listing says its a 2-disc set...so, who knows?

But, in case anyone has ever wondered, that is why I tend to not list these collections...unless they are major releases like the Signature Collections, etc.

Holy, Crap! Thanks Mike! I guess I'll end up with an extra disc of The Jerk! Too bad The Man With Two Brains wasn't included!
