    What's the mechanism that automatically scrolls down to a certain part of a web page when a link is clicked on? For example, If I'm on the 21st reply of a thread, highlight it, copy it, and use it somewhere else, why isn't the page displayed from the top?

    It's called an anchor.

    For example, if you had

    {a href="#FRED"}Click here to see Fred{/a}

    Then later on down the page had

    {a name="FRED"}Here's Fred!{/a}

    Clicking on the "Click here..." link would bring you down to the Fred section.

    Of course, you'll need to replace all "{" with "" for proper HTML.
