I've always wondered about the history of this forum. Here are some suggestions
    Parker Clack and Ronald Epstein
    - The life and times of these two gentlemen would make interesting stories.
    Administrator Bios
    - Uh, yeah, these guys are important too. [IMG]
    The Legend of Turkey Knapp
    - I don't know who this is, but apparently, a lot of people do.
Servers: From Beginning to the Present
    - The wonderful story of the forum as it jumps from new server to new server
    The Hall of Shame
    - A list of banned people. [IMG] [IMG]
Seriously, I'm pretty sure most people would love to know how this forum came about.

    Dome,

It seems all I do these days is write.

Perhaps one of these days I'll write a

bio of Home Theater Forum along with Parker.

    The quick story....

We started on Prodigy in 1992. Original

owners were Ron Epstein and Robert "Blob"

    Simandl.

By 1995 we were on the Delphi service.

In 1996, Robert Simandl resigns. Parker Clack

comes aboard as a new partner and web designer.

In 1997, Home Theater Forum goes live on

the web with only 50 members.

Mike Knapp was one of the original Moderators

and a strong personality here. The turkey

was designed to honor Mike in a humorous light.

Servers? We don't need no stinking servers! [IMG]
Seriously, we started out on a bunch of shared servers and within about a month we had to move to another one and another one and yet another. Then we ended up needing to get on a dedicated server so 800.com gave us the money to have a new server built and Tim Flavin, with Internet 1st, hosted us for about 2 years.
Recently the membership donated enough money to have a new dedicated server built with the help of several members (brianaca, Cees Alons, Chris Maynard) donating some of the parts and getting the server at a reduced cost. Members generated more than we needed so the remainder is being held until we need to have a dedicated server built for the database. (As it stands now we could run the whole thing out of RAM if we wanted).
We moved to QWK.net, owned by Travis Burnside and a member of this forum, a few months ago. This forum would not be running as smoothly as it does without the huge amount of time that Travis puts into. (If you are ever in the neighborhood for a great ISP to host your site you do not have to look any further that QWK.net).
For those of you that like equipment listings we have a Dell dual Pentium 1.26G CPU with 512K cache on each, 2G of ECC 133 RAM, 4 18.6 Gig Hotswap HDs, RAID 5 dual channel with 128M of RAM and dual Hotswap power supplies. We run Linux, PHP, mySQL and vBulletin for the forum software.
We started out with about 50 of us moving from Prodigy to the shared servers. At that time it was not unusual for us to be down for more than a week due to us having to move to another server. We would have to close down without any type of announcement being able to be made and people would still find us. One place would shut us down and not tell us they did so. Talk about a mess. It was Ron going on all of the search engines and putting our site up that has made us found by lots of people.
A lot of modified pictures started to show on the forum of Ron, Obi, Mike Knapp and myself. Turkey Knapp showed up one day and we used it along with our logo on Thanksgiving one year. Needless to say it was an instant hit. Mike even emails me at Thanksgiving if Turkey Knapp isn't on display. For HTF it has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition.
We now return you to your regular postings.

Another thing that would be cool is a summary of some of the milestones or sizable accomplishments that HTF has had over the years. Examples include:
    • The war and victory over DIVX (mentioning the associated Great Server Crash is optional)
    • The turnaround of studios like FOX
    • The Willy Wonka OAR petition, and ongoing OAR battles
    • Innovations by HTF members, such as the Sonosub and Flexy Rack (assuming these ideas originated here)
    • The birth of SVS
    KJP

You forgot to mention that Ron and Packy are recipients of the Larry Carlson "World's Greatest Human Beings" Award, given to those who have given up so much of their own lives to enrich ours. While others certainly have helped, we owe all we get from this forum to those two guys. Someday perhaps we'll get to whole story.

They would have tossed Knapp out of here years ago but were afraid of being blamed for a "Knapp sack"....[IMG]
A history of the wire wars would still cause the server to smoke.....
And there is still the mystery of there being both a Ron Epstein and a Ronald Epstein registered here, both from New Jersey....evil twins?
