I don't think I ever posted in one of the threads that Steve participated in, but I've certainly read his posts over the years. He always had good advice, and was well liked by the HTF community.

I'm going to miss reading his posts, and his presence here.

    Rest in Peace Steve.

Here's the text Steve added at the end of our Mission Statement:

    In summary:
    • We're about community. We are a like-minded but diverse group of individuals who share a common passion for all things relating to Home Theater.
    • We're about movies. Our goal is to enjoy the movie-going experience at home, without sacrificing artistic integrity. We expect the original film and sound formats to be preserved on home video, and embrace the home video formats (like DVD) that allow this to be possible.
    • We're about hardware. Do you have the latest new piece of equipment out on the market? Do you want to compare your products against others? Do you want to ask information on a product before making that big purchase? Here is the place to do so and more.
    • We're about courtesy. We are not a "no holds barred" news group. You are expected to conduct yourself in a courteous and professional manner on Home Theater Forum. Administrative staff works 24/7 to ensure this.
    • We're about family. You are as likely to read about someone's new baby, job, or house as you are their new satellite dish, television, or DVD purchase. We have designated areas where you can talk about a wide range of topics. But our focus is--and always will be--Home Theater.

    That defines Steve as well.

Thanks for this link to Steve's profile. I just viewed it and the status 'Offline' held new meaning and poignancy.

  6. Just heard about this. My heart is heavy today.

Never met the man but I have one quick story. Waaaaay back in the day at about the time he was starting DVD Resource I had started this online newsletter thing that I charged $9.99 a year for. I had gotten to about 100 subscribers but after a few months decided for various reasons to discontinue it, so I wrote everyone saying a full refund was on the way. Steve was the one person who told me to keep it, because he knew how much work I must have put into the thing and he thought I deserved something for making the effort.

    :(

Sorry to hear about Steve. I too remember looking forward to reading his DVD Resource website back in the day before finding the HTF. I also enjoyed reading about his home theater build up back then. Another big loss.

Horrible news. Steve and I had numerous private discussions.

Always a gentleman, with a wonderful intelligence and passion for film and home theater.

My condolences go out to both his immediate, as well as extended families.

    Steve will be missed.

    Just heard the horrible news.

Like others here, Steve was my hero during the "battle against DiVIX" days.

His "DVD Resource" site was daily essential reading.

    I'll miss him greatly.

RIP Steve, and condolences to your family and friends.

This is devastating news. There couldn't have been a more gracious or helpful person than Steve to help us navigate the DVD format when it was new. What a loss for the community.

    We'll miss you, Steve.

Damn. Can't believe we lost Steve. I remember fighting the good fight against Divx back in the 90's with him. Gone much too soon. :(

I think it's been - literally - about a decade since I posted on HTF, but after hearing the news about Steve on Digital Bits it kind of felt the right time to pop back in.

I always liked Steve. He always had something to say and was such a keen supporter of film, formats and the industry in general. His was a name that was doing the rounds right from the very earliest times I can remember on LaserDisc and HT discussion boards.

A sad loss and way too soon. Rest in peace, Steve.
