Not to set off any widespread panic or anything, but Deep Discount DVD is apparently telling its customers that Warner's 2-disc SE of Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America has been discontinued.

I first got wind of this from this thread at DVD Talk

Curiously, both Best Buy and Deep Discount have dropped their listing for this title altogether.

Borders lists it as "Not Available" (though individual stores list it as "In Stock"). Most others (DVD Empire, DVD Planet, Digital Eyes, Amazon) list it as either On Order or Out of Stock.

Most curious of all, Amazon Marketplace sellers are advertising this set as "hard-to-find" and OOP, and pricing it starting at $45!

Accoring to the Big DVD List at Michael's Movie Mayhem, it appears that Warner has assigned two different UPCs to this title:

    085392002627 (release date: 6/10/03)-- discontinued
085393190927 (release date: 9/17/03???)--DVD Profiler doesn't have a listing for this UPC, and I'm not convinced it was ever released.

    Anyone have any insight?

Wow, that’s weird, if it is OOP (and not being improved upon) I better RUN out and get myself a copy ASAP!
Please anyone with some insight, POST!

It's only been out for a few months. Why would they make it OOP so soon?

I know, I don't recall there being anything wrong with the release. This is strange.

Here are links to three threads (and a column) discussing the DVD release of OUATIA:

    Main DVD Release Thread
Robert A. Harris' Digital Bits Column
    Robert Harris HTF Feedback Thread
    Pre-Release Thread

I don't see any extended discussion of serious flaws in the release (nor do I recall seeing any when I watched mine shortly after it was released) that would cause WB to re-tool it (except maybe the awkward disc change point??).

Speculation Follows: I suspect the set with the first UPC was discontinued for some technical or rights issue, and that WB had planned to release a nearly-identical set with the second UPC, but ran into some kind of hitch. So production was stopped on UPC#1 in anticipation of production runs of UPC#2. I think it will be back in production soon.

    Edited to correct links.

It's on the street tomorrow. According to Warner's business to business site, the set is being re-promoted. Since the UPC changed, many retailers said it was being discontinued, but forgot to enter the new UPC number and street date.

No changes in content or packaging, simply a "Re-activate Existing Product" promotion (their words).

Thanks for the news, Peter. I knew there had to be a logical explanation (it seemed odd that WB would spend the big $$$ on this excellent release, then pull it from the shelves less than six months later--especially at holiday time!).

I hope no one made any rash decisions based on the preliminary news. [IMG]

Considering that no store near me has ever carried this title, I will be looking for the re-release. Not a single Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, or Circuit city carried this one in my area.

Forgive me for starting yet another thread with Once Upon a Time in America in the title, but this has been driving me crazy.

I know it sounds like a silly question, considering the DVD was just released this past June, but....

    Is this DVD out-of-print??

Here's the sequence of events that led me to ask this question.

    1. Wanted to take advantage of WB's Buy 2 Get 1 SE Free promotion, so I ordered Unforgiven and Once Upon a Time in America from DDD.

    2. While checking my order status, I saw that OUATIA had been "cancelled". Huh? I called DDD customer service and they tell me they "aren't going to be getting that title anymore".

    3. Then this email shows up:

    4. So while shopping tonight, I stopped by Target and Best Buy. Neither store have it.

    5. I come home and check Amazon and BestBuy.com. Out of stock.

    6. I call WHV's customer service. The woman on the phone clacks away on her keyboard and replies that "that title doesn't show up in the catalog". I remind her that it is indeed a WB title and that it was released about six months ago. She's never heard of it. She was quite polite, but no help at all.

    7. I post this thread hoping to get an answer. Because I'd really like to get this DVD and I'm kicking myself for not purchasing it earlier.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Oh, I really hope they will re-release it here in Brazil, and fix the awful censorship they did with a scene in the movie, on the first DVD release a few months ago....

FYI: I picked this up at CostCo for 13.99, a sale it's running until 1/18 on all Warner 2 disc-ers. Stock may vary at your stores.
