It had been on my want list for some time, but apparently the only way to get 1996's The Substitute with Tom Beringer was via an Artisan Double Feature flipper DVD, bundled with the third film (for whatever reason) -- which my wife gifted me this year for the holidays -- but I was highly disappointed to discover that the first film ISN'T anamorphic widescreen as all the reviews I read suggested it was. As such, because my Panasonic UHD BD player doesn't have a zoom button on its remote to correct for these types of discs, I had to use my Samsung display's screen size controls to guess at what the 1.85:1 image should have looked like.
From all the research I have done, it seems like there was, at one time, a standalone snapper case DVD of The Substitute, but that appears to be long out of print (and most likely non-anamorphic, as well); there never seemed to be a standalone Blu-ray released, at least in Region 1. I do know that a studio released a four-film Blu-ray collection recently, but I don't think it was for Region 1/A (and, apparently, the first film was edited to hell, robbing it of a lot of its violence and action). Plus, I'm not spending 67 bucks just because I like the first film only.
Does anyone know if this was some kind of misprint or misinformation with regard to the reviews that are out there of The Substitute on this Double Feature DVD? I was under the impression, based on what I read, that it WAS anamorphic -- are there ANY versions of this film out there for Region 1 that are anamorphic (on the DVD format)?
The version she picked up looks like this:
The back of the box does not claim it's anamorphic -- but, as I said, reviews I read claimed it was (unless I'm mistaken).
