Classic flix is listing this Warner Bros. and the Homefront Collection. for a November 11th release. The collection includes:
This is the Army
Hollywood Canteen
Thank you lucky stars.
This collection has been previously discussed in this forum, but now we have a release date.
Wonderful Warner!!!!! Quo Vadis, the Holiday Collection vol. 2 and now this. November will be a great month!!

Warner has given us such a "musical" year - Classic Musicals, the Sinatra sets, Busby Berkeley and now this!!! Wow!

That's truly wonderful news - I love all 3 films and Thank Your Lucky Stars has always been a particular favorite of mine. Talk about star power!!!

This set and the Holiday ones will be at the top of Christmas wish list

This is great news though I'm surprised THOUSANDS CHEER wasn't also included as it has a similar theme and great MGM star power.

I guess they wanted to release Warner-only product of this era for the Anniversary year. Surely Thousands Cheer will be included in a later Classic Musicals set, made of MGM titles.

I actually suggested something like this over a year ago in this forum under the heading what box sets would you like to see. If this sells as good as I hope it will, one buyer here, perhaps Warner’s will put out another set, MGM Homefront and include the aforementioned great film “Thousands Cheer” and add “The Human Comedy” and “The War Against Mrs. Hadley” to the mix.

I am just waving the flag that Warner’s has rescued “This Is The Army” from PD domination. I look forward to their release and throw that damn cheap copy I have away.

Way to go and THANKS Warner Bros. You are having a great 85th birthday with this release and the others announced and released.

Yeah I love it when a studio saves one of their films from PD hell.

I hate the fact my local library has quite a few PD DVDs. I can't handle the fact that taxes are being handed over to companies that couldn't care less about preserving the films they release.

Which of the films has the outtake song and restored overture? THIS IS THE ARMY has exit music. I hope that they have a marketing venue for the other WB all star films: SHOW OF SHOWS, IT'S A GREAT FEELING, STARLIFT. SHOW OF SHOWS and MGM's HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929 were on the "Dawn of Sound" ld.

yes, these are definitely important films to have available--both because they are insanely fun and because (as propaganda films) they are very valuable to popular culture scholars!

I assume that the "star" in the "star/historian commentary" will be Joan Leslie who stars in all three films. The only other survivor that I can think of is Janis Paige who made her film debut in HOLLYWOOD CANTEEN. That's why it is so important to get these classics out there.

I thought Joan Leslie would deserve at least a little space on the DVD cover since she stars in all 3 films, but I guess she is not well-known enough today.

The only other survivors I can think of are Olivia de Havilland, Patty Andrews, Eleanor Parker, Joyce Reynolds and Dorothy Malone (uncredited) - but they only appear a few seconds or minutes at most. There is also vocalist Sally Sweetland (who is close to 97!) who sang for Miss Leslie in all her Warner musicals.

Never mind me! Ha! I actually did speak to Sally Sweetland about 2 years ago and she was wonderful and lively, sharing her memories and having nothing but nice things to say about Joan Leslie and her other uncredited voice work in pictures. And I know Miss Leslie was very pleased with Sally Sweetland's seamless vocals too.

I certainly will be looking forward to the commentary by Miss Leslie, as announced on the press release in the other thread.

As the PBS special on the history of Warner Bros approaches, the end of the month, and the release of this set, I have a history question. Of all the studios, which did the most work for the war effort during WWII? I know MGM did "Thousands Cheer" and United Artists, "Stage Door Canteen", but from the donation of time and money, it seems Disney and Warners did the most. Correct me if I am wrong.

An observation. The PBS special, which I believe will be an "American Masters" series, done in co-operation with Warners and using copyrighted material, who gets to distribute the show on DVD, Paramount or WBHV?

I assume you are talking about "You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros Story" This will be released on DVD by WHV. It was mentioned in the announcement of the celebration of Warner's 85th Anniversary. Not sure why you would think Paramount would release.

Regarding the DVD distribution of the forthcoming WB PBS special, it was my understanding that Paramount has the rights to distribute PBS programs, though WB distributes BBC shows.
