“Millions Flee from Cities! End of the World!” From a Manhattan skyscraper, Ralph Burton (Harry Belafonte) surveys the emptiness announced by that chilling newspaper headline. Nuclear doomsday has come. Ralph is sure he is the last person alive. Then, a woman (Inger Stevens) appears and the two form a cautious friendship that’s threatened when a third survivor (Mel Ferrer) arrives. Unlike other postapocalyptic thrillers, from The Time Machine to I Am Legend, there are no external monsters to battle here. Instead, the monsters – fear, intolerance, jealousy – lurk inside the all-too human beings. And heightening the intensity of writer/director Ranald MacDougall’s suspenseful and unsettling movie are stunning vistas of unpopulated New York: vast, empty and soulless.

What an interesting movie. I remember watching it on the old CBS Thursday Night Movie decades ago. For some reason I never purchased a home copy, but I will not pass this by.

Never seen this one or heard of it for that matter, but my first instinct (apparently quite a few others) is that this sounds like a movie version of several Twilight Zone episodes

Very definitely on the buy list

And with the usually warnings that WAC preorders and Amazon don't mix well if you are a release day/week/month person.

A very interesting film, if for no other reason, to revisit midtown Manhattan completely empty of people. Eerie, gripping and beautifully photographed, in what I recall as black & white Panavision. Also, if IMDB is to be believed, a Milklos Rozsa score originally recorded in 4 track mag. (I first saw this in 16mm scope, with a mono track). But if this is indeed in stereo (if the stems have survived) that's reason enough to own this disk.

Yes another film I saw on original release with a very powerful MIklos Rozsa score. I’m sure it will be stereo - the DVD was.

Yes. The Press release above, which I didn't read until I had already posted, says 2.0 stereo

This will be a blind buy for me. Sounds right up my alley.

It's like a giant Twilight Zone episode. And I mean that in a good way. I was haunted by it when I saw it on TV in the late 70s.

I too saw this a very long time ago on what I believe was a local PBS Sat nite movie show.
Always had a crush on Inger Stevens.
It is somewhat like an excellent Twilight Zone episode but without the non-surprise, "ironical" ending.
