Appearances are everything in Hollywood. So, when conniving moviemaker Jonathan Shields realizes few mourners will show up for the funeral of his equally conniving father, he knows what to do: hire extras. Kirk Douglas gives a magnetic, Oscar®-nominated performance as Shields, who turns talent, charisma and ruthlessness into film success, stomping on careers and creating enemies along the way. Vincente Minnelli directs this winner of five Academy Awards® that’s more than a compelling insider’s look at Tinseltown: It’s an opportunity for buffs to guess which real-life stars and moguls inspired the roles played by Douglas, Lana Turner, Walter Pidgeon, Dick Powell, Best Supporting Actress Gloria Grahame and more.

It took less than two months. Now, I have to watch my digital this week as it might be the only time I watch it.;) Great film and highly recommended to anybody that hasn't seen the movie and love the movie industry.

After seeing how gorgeous Days of Wine and Roses looked this afternoon, I have no doubt this will look equally astounding. Can't wait!

    finally!

    FINALLY!

I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for this!

(& yes, it should look exquisite, with chocolaty blacks and luminous whites, as opposed to the DVD, which is like peering though a stained window with sunglasses on into a steambath on a very grey day. )

In particular, I can't wait to see the swimming pool scene, all those spotlights reflected on the pool's shimmering and shifting surface, with Ms. Turner's platinum hair and general complexion offsetting it all.

Hoo- bloody -ray! I love Lana Turner but I'm really eager to watch in high definition ElaIne Stewart stick the knife in with that lethal speech "The picture's finished Georgia. You're business; I'm company. . . . Oh, by the way, I forgot to tell you Georgia, I saw the picture . . . I thought you were swell"

You must be remembering that 35mm print we saw at MoMA so many decades ago.

The answer is "Yes", Mr. Epstein. And a resounding one at that.

    Robert Surtees won his second of three Oscars for Best Cinematography;
with the other two being "King Solomon's Mines" and "Ben-Hur".

FILE UNDER: The Blind Buy and The Beautiful.:)

Was it at MOMA? I couldn't remember where it was, but I knew I saw something that was totally exquisite and tonally gorgeous, so that when I got the DVD I couldn't even watch it.

A great behind-the-scenes movie about Hollywood. Almost as good as Sunset Blvd.

@Ronald Epstein this isn’t just any run of the mill RCR, but one of the few RCHR’s that we rarely see! Don’t hesitate to get this great film.

Who were the inspirations for the characters.

Kirk Douglas: Jonathan inspired by David O Selznick
Lana Turner: Georgia inspired by Diana Barrymore daughter of John Barrymore.
Walter Pidgeon: Harry Pebbel inspired by Val Lewton

Who else or other choices for the above.
