“An Army post in peacetime is a dull place.” So begins Carson McCullers’ famous novel of secret passion, Reflections in a Golden Eye. But beneath the smooth surface of military routine, a deadly tension mounts. Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando star in this startling screen version that, like the book, crackles with mysterious, exotic energy. They play the Pendertons: He’s a hidebound career officer wrestling with inner demons; she’s a caged lioness needful of love, whatever the source. Their off-kilter relationship plays out under the voyeuristic gaze of a soldier (Robert Forster) soon to become the focal point of tragedy. Provocatively directed by John Huston, and costarring Brian Keith and Julie Harris in moving supporting performances, this spellbinder is powerful and complex – just like that emotion called love. This 2-disc set presents Reflections in a Golden Eye in both of its forms: the original “gold”-hued version of the film, as legendary director Huston intended, and the full-color general theatrical release version. Both have been newly remastered especially for this release.

Thrilled about this! I own Warner's 2014 French Blu-ray of the full-colour version of the film, but it has forced subtitles, as well as the iTunes HD digital of the golden hued version, so picking up this release, which boasts brand new masters of both versions of the film, is a no brainer!

Warners Archives is killing it today with these announcements and I'll be buying all but 1 of them (sorry Tin Cup). Two Robert Mitchum titles, one Tennessee Williams (with a stunning Geraldine Page performance), one underrated John Huston (terrific Brando performance) and the physical media debut of Action Of The Tiger! I'm with you, great release announcements. Funny thing, my roommate in college was a big golf fan and he had the movie poster for Tin Cup in our apartment. I'll be making a pass on that one too though, the rest are definite picks for me.

I don’t understand one blessed nanosecond of “Reflections In a Golden Eye”...but it’s quite entertaining and Liz looks smashing. The “golden” tinted version is indeed the one to see.

Newcomers to the film may want to set up their phone to record their reaction to the finale as the end credits roll.

The gold-toned version looks fresh, like something in cinemas now. Or like a segment from the first season of Westworld:


The normal colored version looks very nice but not as......abstracted(?) (surreal?) as the Golden-toned one. Interesting that in Brando’s closeup in the horse barn, the lighting is harsh and he isn’t wearing any makeup. Kind of unusual for the era.

That's why the "golden" version works the best. It is a surreal dream of a film. The color version is too "realistic" and totally destroys the dream like quality of the film.

And how lucky we are to now have all three on Blu-ray! Never did I think we'd have Boom! and Secret Ceremony on Blu.

I agree but there are those who are put off by the golden sepia palette of the film because it's too "artsy" and the Technicolor is more lifelike even though it destroys the very surreal dreamlike quality that Huston intended.

Because I haven't seen that version in over fifty years, and I'd like to see that version again. I've watched the "golden" version many times on disc.

Loved this film for over 30 years, but I hate the 'gold' version. It is sickly to watch, and although that's what Huston wanted, I can't stand the film this way. Glad that they are including both versions, though.
