Can armed robbery save a marriage? This comedy starring Natalie Wood, Peter Falk, Dick Shawn and Jonathan Winters debates this and other questions about modern relationships. Penelope (Wood) marries James Elcott (Ian Bannen) after a very brief courtship, and as his star rises in the banking business, he spends less and less time with her. Penelope devises what she thinks is a good plan to get James’ attention – disguising herself as an old lady and robbing his bank. Unfortunately, the robbery is successful, and now Penelope has bigger problems on her hands. Adding extra fizz to this effervescent caper comedy is buoyant and joyful music from John Williams’ early days as a film composer. Williams demonstrates his skills with pop and jazz in a score that includes the title tune, featuring lyrics by Leslie Bricusse (Victor/Victoria, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory).

I remember this as being pretty awful except for a wild (and sorta sexy) slapstick sequence involving a crazed Jonathan Winters chasing a bikinied Natalie Wood around a room. That almost made it worth sitting through, but not enough for me to purchase.

"Penelope" has some good moments that are undone by the uneven shift in tone. The opening sequence of Natalie robbing her husband's bank is stylishly executed and brilliant. And then we get an unfunny Benny Hill style slapstick scene with Winters that yes, let's Natalie look great but it's the kind of comic scene that is totally at odds with what the tone of the film was setting itself up to be. Then the film takes another wrong turn in the final third when Natalie is convinced she's going mad.

But in between there are other charms. Peter Falk literally is tuning up for "Columbo" in his role as a police detective (even wearing the same suit!) and his scenes with Wood are like watching a lost episode of "Columbo" (and also shows Falk's versatility considering he'd worked with Natalie the year before in "The Great Race"). Good comic John Williams score too (in the era when his film work was more comedic; the next year he would do the scores for "How To Steal A Million" and "Guide For The Married Man")

At long last I can retire my non-anamorphic TCM recording from over fifteen years ago!

I remember going into this back in the day really anticipating how much I was going to love it and emerging feeling kind of letdown. I haven't seen it since, so many decades later. It would be nice to revisit again, with the Columbo reference in my mind now (thanks, Jack P).

Yes! More Natalie Wood on blu ray is a good thing. Hopefully Splendor In The Grass, Inside Daisy Clover and Sex And the Single Girl aren't far behind. Thank you, WA.

The cover looks pretty scandalous for the 1950s...

It does! But Penelope is a 1966 film.

Penelope is no great movie but a 4K scan of the original camera negative by Warner Archive makes this an imperative purchase. It helps that Natalie Wood is in it! She was never an especially strong screen presence but I've always liked her.

It also had a not so coarse poster with Wood in a single 60s not quite minidress. That was the one used for its premiere at Radio City and I wish they had used it for this. This one is as embarrassing as the movie itself and I can't imagine many people today would find Winters perils of Pauline attempted rape of Wood very funny. Still it has a very glossy mid 60s NY look to it which should be splendid in a 4k scan of the original negative. The titles are terrific.
