SPECIAL FEATURES: 50 YEARS OF MGM (1974 TV special), JUST ONE MORE TIME (Vintage Featurette), Original Theatrical Trailer

M-G-M marked its 50th anniversary with this outstanding collection of musical performances from the studio’s reign as the king of the genre during Hollywood’s golden era. Drawing from more than 100 feature films, writer/producer/director Jack Haley Jr.’s compilation took the box-office by storm, becoming one of the highest grossing films of 1974, and brought excerpts from timeless gems from "An American in Paris" to "Ziegfeld Follies to audiences new and old in just 135 magical minutes. For this special occasion, Haley called upon great stars to ‘host’ this brilliantly conceived cinematic event: Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly, Peter Lawford, Liza Minnelli, Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, Frank Sinatra, James Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor. This celebration of the M-G-M musical has been painstakingly remastered from the best existing elements to yield a new presentation that finally does justice to Haley's dazzling cinematic achievement, which cemented the importance of the M-G-M musical's unique place in film history.

Well, this is what I asked for in July in the Warner Archive thread, so I guess I got what I wanted.

The obvious extra not included here but on another archive release is the documentary, "Hollywood: The Dream Factory" which was a forerunner to the "That's Entertainment" films and starts with scenes from the infamous MGM auction in 1970.

I remember complaints about the previous Blu-ray release.
Yes, the original Blu-ray was released in the early days of the format and looks horrible. That's why I kept my DVD.

This had to have been a huge undertaking having to remaster the individual segments. Really looking forward to this one. That's Entertainment! is what helped to launch my lifetime enjoyment of musicals and classic films in general.

With the upcoming release of The Thin Man collection of previously released films, why do I suspect a box set of all three That's Entertainment films in a few years? Do I wait? Decisions, decisions!

I wonder if this will have the option (like either the first DVD or LD - can't remember which) of viewing some of the clips in their OAR.

One of the earlier releases had two versions - the theatrical T.E with some early clips cropped to match the widescreen T.E presentation, and then a special version with the newer portions letterboxed.

Don't know about the LD but the DVD was a flipper with the theatrical version on one side and the TV version with the 1:37 clips in their OAR or 1:33 on the other.

The press release only mentions one version of the film

I imagine we will be told during the next podcast that remastering parts 2 and 3 will depend on sales for part 1. Yes, if parts 2 and 3 are remastered and rereleased, it seems logical that there would be a new box set sometime later. Perhaps one "That's Entertainment" a year for the holidays and a boxset for the holidays after they are all released. All guesses on my part.

I’m sure this is terrific but it could never replicate the astonishingly revelatory presentation I first saw at the Ziegfeld theatre in NYC during its initial run in 1974. That’s a cherished memory that has stayed with me for 50 years.

In the home it just can’t have the impact it did on that large screen. It’s too bad that there is little to no audience for a re-release so that others can experience it the way I did.

That's what they said about the other Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan films as well, yet nothing on those either?

Interesting to see Warner Archive doing their first (?) remaster of a title already on Blu. This is the 50th anniversary, so good reason as any to release it. Should be a significant upgrade as the majority of the excerpts are from films Warner has since done 4K scans or remasters.

George said that would likely not happen this year as the 2024 titles were already locked in when Tarzan the Ape Man was released earlier this year. Remember, it can take a year or more to prepare and bring a title to disc.

Yes, the B&W clips on the existing blu ray are extremely grainy though the streaming version was better. Now let's get restored versions of "On The Town" and "Anchors Aweigh."
Wasn't aware the streaming version was better. Thank you. Which platform?

BTW it wasn't only the B&W clips which were sub-par. I'm guessing all the clips on this release will look as good as possible. Great news.
