High Society would be a much better film without Grace Kelly. I’ve never understood the adulation she receives. Expressionless, wooden actress with a phoney accent and over-rated in the looks department. She was fortunate in being cast in some good films but I’ve never enjoyed her performance in any of them. There I’ve said it. You can hate me now. :D

Certainly no hate, I just disagree. Grace Kelly was (at least with makeup, but even, as in THE COUNTRY GIRL, almost without), a gorgeous woman, and sultry as hell (at her best in REAR WINDOW). In HIGH SOCIETY, we find she can carry a tune. I love the song "True Love," which has been endlessly covered. Her duet with Crosby is a beautiful one, and I listen to it frequently. That aside, she has a very specific screen persona. She is quiet, steady, intelligent, sexually aware, and often flirtatious. I love most of her characters. Her marriage to Prince Rainier broke a lot of hearts, including mine.

good to see Warner releasing this, a pity that Disney who now owns 20th Century Fox does follow suit and release more of its classic musicals on 4k
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes would be a great candidate for a 4K release. I'm hopeful with the upcoming 4K releases of The Sound Of Music and Rocky Horror that disney might keep rolling out more fox musicals on 4K in the future.

Now You Has Jazz is one of the best musical numbers in a musical. Everyone is perfection. Was that recorded live? The dubbing of all those instruments is too good. The interplay with Crosby and Armstrong is a joy. But it so unlike Porter. A constant youtube go to for me which looks extremely good.
Why was Kelly excellent with Hitchcock but mediocre with everyone else?

OK. Full disclosure. I haven't seen entire film. Only scenes. But even then I only see glasses and an old sweater with rolled up sleeves worn by a strikingly pretty woman.

Mediocre Kelly in The Country Girl?
Her line readings aren't bad. She was clearly coached, but though the way she speaks has clarity and even a kind of lovely musicality, to these ears anyway; you never feel there's an actual character there. Those feelings are shrouded. Yes, the character she plays is also reticent, but those spaces and gestures, though good on a superficial level, don't move me in the way they're supposed to. It's a performance. We never get to know who that person is. I like her in the film, but for me, both Bing and William Holden are revelations, and make the film worth watching. They're clearly reacting to her, so that part is fine, but she never lets us know why. The film works, so I guess that's not necessary. But imagine Judy Garland in the role. You would know exactly why she is doing the things she does, and feel for her, connected in every instant of screen time, whereas with Grace Kelly, it remains a mystery, her presence likable but obscure, though she still makes the film work for me. Yet I want more, especially since I saw this film on the same day as The Rose Tattoo, as they were released together, but that's probably not a fair comparison.

We all have different tastes, and I'm not going to criticize someone else's. I'll just say that for me, Grace Kelly is a timeless beauty! And a fine actress. Moreover, she had that ineffable movie star quality. I mean, who else could have so perfectly pulled off the line, "Do you want a leg or a breast?"

How about a double feature 4k of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The Seven Year Itch!

I served for many years on the Princess Grace Awards Theatre Committee. While I never got to know her the legacy of what she let behind in terms of philanthropy and critical support for artists in Film, Theatre, and Dance, is extraordinary. I always found her an actress of considerable beauty and very compelling when well cast. To Catch A Thief, Rear Window and High Society are all romps that I enjoy and admire. Maybe not as versatile as many of the best during the height of her career but I’ve never found her wooden. who knows what she might have achieved if she had stayed in the field? Remember, Jessica LAnge started in KING KONG…

The catering college I went to in the early 1980s actually used to make the cake for her in Kendal Cumbria Uk when she used to open the rose show in the lake district each year.

Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but personally I think Grace Kelly was one of the most stunningly beautiful women ever put on the big screen. She captivates me in every film I have seen of hers.
