Forget cotton. Tobacco is king in the American South of the 1890s. Brant Royle buys and sells tobacco - and plenty of it, building a cigarette-manufacturing empire. But his empire is starting to crumble. Gary Cooper gives iconic presence to the role of Royle, whose drive for wealth and power is fueled by a desire for revenge against the tycoon (Donald Crisp) who earlier brought ruin to his family. Another desire also enflames Royle's heart. He’s romantically drawn to the magnate's imperious daughter (Patricia Neal)...and she may have an agenda of her own. Lauren Bacall plays an elegant Royle's inamorata. And Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) directs with a keen sense of style, place and timeless burning ambitions.

A nice underrated little drama that's a favorite of mine. She might be billed third but this is Patricia Neal's movie all the way. Neal steals the movie away from Bacall the way Dorothy Malone stole Written On The Wind from her. Bacall was always the least interesting when playing "good" girls.

I really like this movie. I have been watching it on the burned dvd from warner for years. George stated on the extras podcast that bright leaf was a revelation and the original negative looks so good. This should mean the new blu ray release will be a steller release for them. As a smokeless tobacco user for 48 years now i am a big fan of movies on the tobacco industry. Both my father and grandfather chewed snuff into their 80s and i will too if something else dont get me.

Bright leaves is a very good documentary that is related to this movie. While i prefer movies in 4k, warner's blu ray releases are top of the line.
