The apex of a genre (Astaire Rogers.) Amazing timeless songs. Director George Stevens. On the Library of Congress National Film Registry list. On AFI's Top 100 list. There's a timeless energy about it that will be mentioned every time a compilation of the most iconic moments in cinema history are compiled. What "extra something" does Swing Time have to make it into the Criterion collection, but not Captain Blood?
If Criterion could release Armageddon they're capable of releasing just about anything. They released The Blob, Night of the Living Dead, The Great Escape etc. I know they don't exclusively release "art films" but I can make a case for many of those more than that particular Warner Bros. title. I would NOT be saying that if they close The Adventures of Robin Hood, or even Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Captain Blood, the first screen pairing of Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland as well as Erich Wolfgang Korngold, one of the first Hollywood movies he scored that launched his Hollywood career and changed the way movie scores were done. All three became Hollywood legends after the success of this movie. Furthermore, it was directed by Michael Curtiz, one of Hollywood's greatest directors. The apex of a genre (Astaire Rogers.) That made me smile. I’m reliving old film school arguments about which film is better. It's funny how some of us won't concede an argument even though they're in the overwhelming minority regarding a subject matter.![]()
That was 1999. 25 whole years ago. I forgive them for that "mistake" but that was concurrent with their Laserdisc days where it was all about the director approved transfer, bonus material/supplements on the second disc, etc. Besides Bay's The Rock, I can't think of any other films in their library (or was they're both OOP) that are similar. If Criterion could release Armageddon they're capable of releasing just about anything.

I sincerely hope you're right.I’m thinking Criterion has at least one of those two Lewton films.
The Adventures of Robin Hood ? .......Yes, Absolutely !Talking of Flynn, it's about time his greatest film was released on 4k.

Thankfully this list was accurate. 'Round Midnight was on my most-wanted list since the inception or Blu-ray.The plain truth is that Captain Blood and O Lucky Man are the only movies left from this list of WB DVDs that went OOP in 2017 that haven't been released by Criterion... yet.
The original NY Times review of its first performance in New York I think you'll find very interesting. The apex of a genre (Astaire Rogers.) Amazing timeless songs. Director George Stevens. It's also available in HD on iTunes, but I think only with the English dub.All this talk about Fred & Ginger reminded me that I want Fellini's Ginger & Fred (1986), which I believe is owned by WB. Released on Bluray in France only.
