GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #14

“False Witness”
written by John Meston
story by Marian Clark
directed by Ted Post
guests: Wright King, Wayne Rogers, Robert Griffin, Len Hendry, Richard Sinatra, Clem Fuller, Norman Sturgis, Brad Trumbull, Harold Goodwin

It’s a good and inspired whodunit/mystery with a young man falsely-accused of murder and featuring a courtroom scene and an arrogant and egotistical eyewitness: don’t miss the twist in which Dillon shakes the schemer up strongly! Dillon faces a moral dilemma by sending an innocent man to the gallows. Find the first appearance of actor Wayne Rogers.

Returning guest actors: Wright King (the season 4 “Born to Hang”), Robert Griffin (the season 2 “Wrong Man”).

GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #15

“Tag, You’re It”
written by Les Crutchfield
directed by Jesse Hibbs
guests: Paul Langton, Madlyn Rhue, Gregg Stewart, Clem Fuller, Harold Goodwin

It’s a good hired killer meeting a dance hall girl drama and a mystery because nobody knows who is the contract? People of Dodge City feel uneasy and consider the mechanic as the grim reaper itself. Chester tries vainly to court the dance hall girl. The episode starts with the Boot Hill introduction.

Returning guest actors: Paul Langton (the season 4 “Gunsmuggler”), Harold Goodwin (the season 5 “False Witness”).

GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #16

“Thick ’N’ Thin”
written by John Meston
story by Les Crutchfield
directed by Stuart Heisler
guests: Robert Emhardt, Percy Helton, Tina Menard

It’s a petty comical partners entry, in other words two old loudmouths/former business associates fight each other for nothing in the vicinity of a ranch. Dillon acts like the go between to settle the issue and uses many tricks and even locks them up in order to force them. Find the first appearance of both Robert Emhardt and Percy Helton.

Returning guest actors: none.

GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #17

“Groat’s Grudge”
written by John Meston
story by Marian Clark
directed by Andrew V. McLaglen
music composed by Rene Garriguenc and conducted by Lud Gluskin
guests: Ross Elliott, Thomas Coley, Ben Wright, Dabbs Greer, Clegg Hoyt, Howard Culver, Clem Fuller

It’s a good revenge-oriented piece with a civil war backdrop and a cattle outfit thanks to the performance of actor Ross Elliott as the diehard former Confederate soldier on his way to avenge the murder of his wife is good and the film-making of Andrew V. McLaglen. In the very end, things are not what they appear to be.

Returning guest actors: Thomas Coley (the season 3 “Gun for Chester”), Ben Wright (the season 4 “Kitty’s Rebellion”), Clegg Hoyt (the season 4 “Monopoly”).

GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #18

“Big Tom”
written by John Meston
story by Marian Clark
directed by Andrew V. McLaglen
music by Leith Stevens
guests: Robert J. Wilke, Harry Lauter, Don Megowan, Howard Caine, Gregg Palmer, Rand Harper, Clem Fuller

It’s a good and inspired retired prizefighter episode that is highlit by actor Robert J. Wilke as the man with a painful past who wishes a second chance as in the existential “The Boots” with actor John Larch. As usual, Dillon gets involved and does his best to save the man from a dead-end and replaces him: the violent fistfight is shot hand-held in a realistic fashion under the guidance of Andrew V. McLaglen and it is as good as “Incident at Two Graves” from Rawhide and “The Night of the Vipers” from The Wild Wild West. The realm of the pugilist reminds the leaning of the famous Errol Flynn film Gentleman Jim. The cast of the fancy crooks is good: Harry Lauter as leader promoter Cran Clay, Howard Caine as his second Brady, Don Megowan as bully prizefighter Hob Creel. Find the first appearance of actors Harry Lauter and Don Megowan.

Returning guest actors: Robert J. Wilke (the season 5 “Saludos”), Gregg Palmer (the season 4 “How to Kill a Friend”).

As a fan of OTR, Ben Wright voiced many characters on GUNSMOKE.
Also ESCAPE and SUSPENSE.
And was the voice of "Hey Boy" on HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL.
Virginia Gregg with Wright in the photo voiced "Miss Wong" on HGWT.

John Dehner was the voice of PALADIN.
He also voiced many characters on GUNSMOKE.
And was the voice of J.B. Kendall on "Frontier Gentleman". Another excellent radio western series.

GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #19

“Till Death Do Us”
written by Les Crutchfield
directed by Jean Yarbrough
guests: Milton Selzer, Mary Field, Rayford Barnes

It’s a not bad legalist entry, a harsh family drama and a pamphlet on a provocateur puritan or a prophet of doom who is hated by the saloon girls and therefore is the target of a shooter in the dark alley. Things are not what they appear to be about the person who commissions the contract and, as usual, Dillon feels that something is wrong. The low-key conclusion seems unfinished and let open. One scene not to miss: at the Long Branch, Miss Kitty is held hostage by gunman Puggy Rado. Note that it is the first appearance of actors Milton Selzer and Rayford Barnes—always typecast as a mean vicious henchman.

Returning guest actors: none.

GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #20

“The Tragedian”
written by John Meston
story by Les Crutchfield
directed by Arthur Hiller
guests: John Abbott, Howard McNear, Harry Woods, Stanley Clements

“You know, he was right, Doc. He was pretty good at dyin’.”
—Matt Dillon.

It’s a very good dual narrative that includes the mysterious brother of a condemned man on the way to Dodge to free his relative on the sly adventure combined with a former fancy stage actor turned cheap crook drama. Dillon shows his social side by helping an un-employed half-starved maverick and vainly finds him a job. Find the first of the four inspired episodes from that season directed by Arthur Hiller. Actor John Abbott rather belongs to the colorful and eccentric realm of The Wild Wild West if you catch what it is implied. The episode starts with the Boot Hill introduction.

Returning guest actors: John Abbott (the season 1 “Professor Lute Bone”), Howard McNear (the season 5 “Box O’ Rocks”), Harry Woods (the season 2 “Who Lives by the Sword”).

GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #21

“Hinka Do”
written by Les Crutchfield
directed by Andrew V. McLaglen
music by Fred Steiner
guests: Nina Varela, Walter Burke, Michael Greene, Richard Reeves, Ric Roman, Bob Hopkins

It’s a lighthearted mystery with an investigation, a trigger-happy female boss-oriented piece and a new owner of a (Lady Gay) saloon drama. The episode starts with the Boot Hill introduction. Chester is called Lester by Mamie. Actor Michael Greene will later be cast as Deputy Vance Porter in the short-lived western series The Dakotas.

Returning guest actors: Nina Varela (the season 3 “Ma Tennis”), Walter Burke (the season 4 “Wind”).

GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #22

“Doc Judge”
written by John Meston
directed by Arthur Hiller
music by Jerry Goldsmith
guests: Barry Atwater, Dennis Cross, Dabbs Greer, George Selk

It’s a very good Film Noir filled with chiaroscuro effects, an unusual Doc-oriented ordeal about the theme of mistaken identity, a weird revengist and bitter ex-convict drama. Chester replaces Dillon as a law enforcer to save the skin of unconscious Doc. The inspired, hectic, sinister and atmospheric music perfectly sustains the guest character consumed and obsessed by his old grudge, well-played by Barry Atwater acting as a stoic grim reaper that foreshadows his part in “Corpus Earthling” from The Outer Limits. After “The Tragedian”, find another well-composed episode by Arthur Hiller. As in “Groat’s Grudge”, find another diehard fanatic getting a gun for a special occasion. This is the very first score—that can be linked to his Twilight Zone and Man from U.N.C.L.E. body of work—by Jerry Goldsmith for the series: so effective that it will be tracked on further seasons and also on Rawhide, especially the Bryce Harp heading to Doc at Delmonico’s cue.

Find a podcast about Jerry Goldsmith’s score for “Doc Judge”

Returning guest actors: Barry Atwater (the season 4 “The Coward”), Dennis Cross (the season 4 “Cheyennes”).

GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #23

“Moo Moo Raid”
written by John Meston
story by Les Crutchfield
directed by Andrew V. McLaglen
guests: Raymond Hatton, Lane Bradford, Robert Karnes, Tyler McVey, Richard Evans, Ron Hayes, John Close, Clem Fuller

It’s a not so serious and, eventually, lighthearted cattlemen clans war drama combined with a so-called homicide case: the twist calls into question that tension-filled piece. For fans of Rawhide only. The cast of the antagonist trail bosses is good: Lane Bradford as Tush Lee versus Robert Karnes as Bert Downey. Find the first appearance of actors Ron Hayes and Richard Evans.

Returning guest actors: Lane Bradford (the season 4 “Jayhawkers”), Robert Karnes (the season 4 “Fawn”), Tyler McVey (the season 3 “Dirt”), John Close (the season 4 “The Coward”).

GUNSMOKE SEASON 5

Episode #24

“Kitty’s Killing”
written by John Meston
story by Marian Clark
directed by Arthur Hiller
guests: Abraham Sofaer, John Pickard, Clem Fuller

It’s an absurd Film Noir filled with charioscuro effects and a creepy revengist entry that eventually focuses on Miss Kitty in the last part of the narrative. The inspired film-making of Arthur Hiller makes it better than it is because the story material is limited and anecdotal. As in “Doc Judge”, find another diehard weirdo coming to town to avenge for a petty reason. The start of Act 1 shows the stranger begging to get locked up to prevent a murder (sic)! This is the first appearance of actor John Pickard. For the record, actor Abraham Sofaer will return during season 7 and will be cast again as a troublemaker in “The Do-Badder”.

Returning guest actors: none.
