Walmart combos for Gunsmoke - these are the sets I own.

    Seasons 1-4
    Seasons 5-7
    Seasons 8-9
    Seasons 10-12

I was glad I held out for the cheaper sets because I just couldn't see purchasing the half season sets. I thank every one who purchased the individual sets who kept the series alive.

I just finished season 15 , and look forward to my complete seasons 16, and 17 in a few weeks. I am a bit worried that the price is basically half the cost of the previous 2 volume sets. Why the drastic price cut in one complete package now? More episodes per disc(more compression), cheap packaging, not remastered? I guess all these worries will be answered in a couple weeks.

As someone previously pointed out, all seasons have now been remastered, so no reason to use old masters. The pricing is probably no more than it being the last seasons of a long running series and they want to get it out quickly, as well as less episodes a season, meaning it can all fit within a single six disk case, so no need for two volumes.

Well I’ll guess I’ll just bite the bullet and finish it out with individual sets. Just wait for the price drops. I have to get s4 of High chapperal and waiting in a bonanza s9 price drop

I was ordering something off importcds.com and noticed they are offering Gunsmoke seasons 18 and 19 for pre-order, scheduled to arrive on February 11 of next year. Like seasons 16 and 17, no volumes, just a single 6-disc set. Sweet!

If I do my math right, that could mean season 20 will be released in April of next year.

Well, let’s continue our exploration of Gunsmoke! I come out of The Long Branch and walk down the streets of Dodge City and my next stop is… season 15 and as Matt Dillon used to say to his opponents: “Hold it right there”.

    GUNSMOKE • SEASON 15 (1969-1970) (26 episodes • 50 mins • color)
It’s the last Sixties era season. The riding fast in the prairie opening title sequence remains as in season 14 but the music theme (opening and ending) is re-arranged and with an emphasis on a guitar. The removal of the opening showdown sequence during season 14 occured because of the anti-violence campaign after political assassinations on the American territory.

Find some interesting directors like former Gunsmoke producer Philip Leacock, the brothers McEveety (Bernard and Vincent), actor-director Robert Totten and two Wild Wild West artisans: Marvin Chomsky and Swedish-born actor Gunnar Hellström. Director Robert Totten also works as an actor: see “Hackett”.

Previous guest characters return like the hill people Albert Moses and his sister Merry Florene in “The Still” and, also, lady farmer Abelia in “A Man Called ‘Smith’”. A new recurring guest character appears: Sergeant Holly in “The War Priest”. You will find a collection of crooks and manipulators: see “Coreyville”, “Danny”, “Doctor Herman Schultz, M.D.”, “The Badge”, “Celia”. Some of the best episodes feature the name of the guest character and this season masterpiece is again with actor Steve Forrest: “Morgan”.

Composers are reduced to four names: newcomer Luchi de Jesus (“Hawk”), Harry Geller, Leon Klatzkin, Johnny Parker.

    PRODUCTION TEAM
    producer: Joseph Dackow
    executive producer: John Mantley
    post production executive: Ron Honthaner
    executive story consultant: Calvin Clements
    assistant story consultant: Jim Byrnes

    director of photography: Monroe Askins

The team remains the same as the late episodes from season 14 except for executive story consultant Paul Savage that is replaced by writer Calvin Clements that started from season 10. On the whole, the general writing tends to soften compared to season 13.

    CAST OF CHARACTERS
Regular cast: James Arness (Matt Dillon), Ken Curtis (Festus), Milburn Stone (Doc), Amanda Blake (Kitty), Buck Taylor (Newly).

At this stage of the series, the leading couple has aged and it shows on the screen: Miss Kitty displays the syndrome of The Picture of Dorian Gray throughout her tired hands.

The semi regular Newly gets his picture medallion credits during the opening titles along with the four leads after two seasons of participation.

supporting cast: Glenn Strange (Bartender/Fiddle player “Sam” Noonan), Ted Jordan (Freight agent “Nathan” Burke), Woodrow Chambliss (Woody Lathrop), James Nusser (wino “Louie” Pheeters).

As usual, the strength of season 15 is the colorful guest actors that add weight to the story: see John Anderson (2), Richard Anderson, John Beck, James Best, J.D. Cannon, Jack Elam, Nina Foch, Steve Forrest, Jodie Foster, Victor French, Beverly Garland, Earl Holliman (2), Ron Howard, Henry Jones, Robert Lansing, Louise Latham (2), Frank Marth (2), William Schallert, John Schuck (2), Jacqueline Scott, Milton Selzer, Paul Stewart, Dub Taylor, Joan Van Ark, Morgan Woodward (2).

    THE DVD SETS
The prints are restored and look wonderful. In each episode and at the end of the first set of end credits, a voice-over announcer introduces the next week trailer. It features separated from the episodes and unrestored next week trailers and, also, English subtitles.

I forgot to say that the "A CBS Television Network Production - filmed at CBS Studio Center" logo was first used on season 9 (1963-64), as that was when CBS took over full ownership of the former Republic Pictures lot at 4024 Radford Avenue, which that studio had ceased using in 1958. Previous to season 9, Gunsmoke had been filmed at Paramount's longtime Melrose Avenue studio (seasons 6-8), and Filmaster (seasons 1-5).

Rawhide was also filmed at the former Republic lot the same season, moving from MGM Studios (where the original Twilight Zone had been filmed at all along bar one episode).

May I add that Van McCoy also co-wrote the score for a Rawhide episode titled "A Moment in The Sun", and he had a big pop hit in 1975 with a disco-flavored tune called "Do The Hustle".

I'm pleasantly surprised at how fast they are finishing this series. I'm about halfway thru Season 15 and have really enjoyed the trip!
